The phrase, "You aren't like most girls," has been deemed and accepted as a compliment for a long time. Being different and unique is constantly being pushed in media. Yet, things that make us very similar to one another are also heavily flaunted. This idea that we have to be different yet the same is what tends to be the root cause of girls constantly being compared to one another by others and ourselves to others.
Hailee Steinfeld released the single, "Most Girls" back in April of 2017 with the intention to band girls together and lift each other up, in a world that doesn't always do so. The lyrics:
"Some girls, feel best in their tiny dresses
Some girls, nothin' but sweatpants, looking like a princess
Some girls, kiss new lips every single night
They're stayin' out late 'cause they just celebrating life," are the first lines Steinfeld sings. These lines first introduce that not all girls are alike and that doesn't make them any better or worse than one another, but rather it's about feeling comfortable with who you are.
It is often difficult for girls to figure out which society is pushing. Society says it is good for us to be different however, wants us to all be the same. People and girls specifically, are critiqued either way. Steinfeld's song brings up the point of it is okay to be both.
As girls, it is really easy to compare oneself to others and it is easy to say things like, "I wish I had her hair" or "I wish I was as outgoing as her," things that make girls feel if they had those things it would make them more confident in who they are. However, this song brings to light that being different is okay and that you don't have to necessarily be different to be special; instead, the best thing a girl can have is confidence in her own skin.
