Why Gun Control Will Not Happen

At least, not at the moment.

Upon my knowledge of the sad tragedies that have recently occurred in the United States and the controversies following them concerning policies regarding gun control, I felt compelled to speak on this. You might agree with my perspective and you may not, which I understand and appreciate. I have to say I am not that knowledgeable about the details of this subject but what I know about this tells me that gun control will not happen, at least not now. Here are two main reasons why.

First of all, the legal gun business is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In the sad reality of our world, money speaks louder than words can. This makes the government’s support of the gun business not-so-shocking. According to NSSF, more than 6 billion dollars are paid as business taxes, which are considered to be “of benefit to the country.”

Additionally, as we all know, a large amount of the fortune of the gun business is selectively distributed to the right people who allow the its continuity

I believe that the fight again guns couldn’t have come at a worst time, since the US has a business man as a president. Whose side do you think he’ll choose? The answer to this question is clearly portrayed in his suggestion to arm teachers (More guns= more money). Having more guns out there does not mean that “Good people with guns can stop bad people with guns”, it only increases the chances of more innocent people getting hurt. Not to mention the fact that it will create a war zone out of schools. Schools where your kids go to, where there suppose to be knowledge not fear; books, not guns, and teachers not soldiers.

Secondly, Gun ownership became a culture on its own, people feel entitled to it because it is the way it has been. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s what should be done. This makes some citizens less opt for the change that is desperately needed. The easy accessibility to guns –especially to those who are unfit to handle one (or 40) - has created the tragic phenomenon of mass shootings, which in itself became normalized in the American society so much that it actually has a website that tracks it (click here to check it out).

There are so many who argue that even if legal guns were controlled or even banned( which is highly unlikely), gun violence will still occur. Absolutely true but, mass shootings with legally bought weapons will decrease if not stop. Others may argue that people kill people not guns. This is only half true because people wouldn’t be able kill dozens in a matter of minutes if it weren’t for the easy accessibility of vast firearms options, not to mention the automatic accessories which are highly unnecessary.

At the end of the day, we all know that what actually needs to be done is:

  • Make it harder to obtain guns through scrutinizing the mental illness factor.
  • Citizens must speak up and report any person that they recognize as a threat to them or others.
  • Any institution that is responsible for the safety of others to take these reports seriously.

Above all, what needs to be remembered is that lives are at stake, lives that could be your sister’s, your brother’s, yours.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
