Gun Control Is A Joke

Will America ever rid herself of gun violence ?

Gun Control Is A Joke

It seems Americans have become immune to the killings plaguing this great nation, yet most of us want change. The hard fact is change will not come unless we fight for it - gun control at this point is but a figment of our imagination, and this is why it is a joke.

Gun control is a joke because the lives of all Americans killed by the reckless use of firearms are worthless. It's permissible for people to murder our children in schools and playgrounds today, while we try to protect against the enemy, radical Islamic terrorists and other countries. We fail to see that we are our biggest enemies. Any country that stands by and watches the senseless slaughtering of its people is a failed nation.

Gun control is a joke because the politicians elected to represent us are bribed (lobbied) to vote down bills concerning the safety and well-being of this nation. It amazes me that America has legalized bribery by calling it lobbying. We are more concerned about corruption around the world when it clearly bombards us in our own backyard. You can buy a politician and his votes if you have the money, and the National Rifle Association surely does.

Gun control is a joke because we as Americans expect others to do the work for us, to make the right decisions regarding our protection and that of our children, when in fact those responsibilities fall upon us. Have you ever called your Legislator, signed a petition, went to a protest, or voted for a gun control politician? If not, then you have blood on your hands because you know there is an issue and you fail to act because you are lazy.

Gun control is a joke because conservatives think that it is essential to have an assault rifle or semi automatic rifle to “protect” themselves. Protect against what? An impending civil war or another assault rifle that might kill you in the club or on campus? We will never know. But it's always handy to walk with your assault rifle to class or to the club to “protect” yourself.

Gun control is a joke because our culture glorifies guns and killing. Almost every movie, every game, is filled with violence and gore. This makes killing a sport, full of entertainment and suspense. Your child is spending hours murdering on a game, becoming warped in a fantasy, hardened to the loss of life, devaluing human worth while you continue to feed his addiction. It is only a short time before he buys a weapon and is overwhelmed with the need to use it, as to him, it's all a game.

Gun control is a joke because buying a weapon is like shopping for salt today - cheap and easy. You can buy an assault rifle or semi-assault rifle with a fake or expired ID, you can have your pick from over thousands of weapons with various degrees of power at your local Walmart in some states. The gun shops today are unregulated, no security cameras, no commission to investigate complaints except the FBI, which is overburdened with other pressing issues. Screening today is looking for a felony instead of detecting if one is psychologically stable to handle the responsibility that comes with the power of carrying a gun.

Gun control is a joke because we think the Second Amendment is still contemporary after 225 years. The world has been reshaped, slavery abolished, the Civil War has passed, the World Wars have gone, the threat of nuclear war has shimmered, stronger, more powerful guns have been created capable of killing with precision, slaughtering hundreds in the matter of a minute and we nevertheless compare them to muskets. It is sad that this country can't seem to comprehend that it should be a privilege instead of a right to carry firearms.

This is the sad state of this nation and it is one that we have to change. Don't expect the bribed politicians to think about you and your family - it falls on us to make the change we want to see. Be political, because our future depends on it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
