Happiness may not be quantifiable, but that doesn't mean that the way to achieve it can't be. There are always a few set steps that we need to take, first, to get to that state.
1. Define what happiness looks and feels like on you
The first and most important step is to figure out what your own, personal happiness looks like. For example, an extrovert will display their emotions differently than an introvert would, but that doesn't mean one is happier than the other. There are simply different ways of expressing emotions.
2. Assess the situation
It's important to keep in mind that your happiness also changes based on the situation you're in, kind of like waves. In every moment, there is a relative "maximum" of happiness that you can reach. Striving to be the happiest you can be in only that situation takes away much of the burden of being happy all the time. So at each point, determine what your happiest would look and feel like, while taking into account anything that is going on around you.
3. Think of and discover things that might get you closer to your "happiness goal"
Now, we need to think of things that make you feel more elated and/or higher in energy. You may know of things based on past experiences, but it's not necessary that you do. We often don't know ourselves enough and that's the entire reason for this method. As you go about trying these different things, keep a list of them somewhere so the next time you need them, they're right there and you don't have to think about it!
4. Do it
Once you have that list, that's all that is left.
5. Rinse and repeat
That's what it really comes down to... a deceptively simple method with many intricacies, all to achieve the ever-elusive goal of happiness. Once you have the basics covered, it's just about practicing it until it becomes a habit.
