It's Thanksgiving time. You know what that means: FOOD. Each year, we celebrate the Native Americans and Columbus getting together and eating a nice, colorful turkey. Even though that didn't even actually happen...because Columbus didn't land in America. Because he landed in like the Caribbean or something that like.
Semantics.
Here is the run-down of the best foods to be served this Thanksgiving:
1. The Turkey.
Because is it really Thanksgiving dinner if you don't have a massive bird as your centerpiece? I didn't think so. Turkey is THE staple of Thanksgiving. Children make turkeys out of their hands at school, Facebook gets flooded with crappy turkey graphics for Black Friday sales... Turkey, turkey, turkey. And what's not to like?
2. Stuffing (or dressing).
Arguably the best of the Thanksgiving foods, stuffing has been around longer than Thanksgiving itself. In ancient Rome, it was popular to use stuffing for extravagant meals. Thankfully, we usually bake stuffing in a casserole dish rather than in the body cavity of turkey, chickens and pigs like the Romans (and America up until not very long ago) did. Stuffing is usually made with breads and meat, veggies and a lot of spices, and it goes perfect with pretty much everything.
3. Green Bean Casserole
I hate green beans. I hate them more than I hate Brussels sprouts, and everyone hates Brussels sprouts. Yet every year during the holidays, I can't get enough of my mom's green bean casserole. It's not the most popular of dishes, but if it can make me actually enjoy green beans once every year, it must be doing something right.
4. Pumpkin Pie
Or any pie, really. What is Thanksgiving (or any family get together) without Great Aunt Sue's self-proclaimed "famous pumpkin pie"? Nothing. The answer is nothing. The best is always saved for last, and Thanksgiving deserts are no exception!
5. Rolls
Lambert's has made an entire successful food franchise based on the idea that people cannot get enough of hot dinner rolls. I can't think of a single Thanksgiving that hasn't been accompanied by my family devouring 3 or 4 batches of rolls. The holidays are the one time of year when carb loading is encouraged, so go hog wild this year with everyone's favorite Thanksgiving staple food.
So slap on a pair of stretchy pants, pop a few Tums, and let's get down to business.
