It's All About the Fabric
My golden rule is never ever buy anything 100% cotton because it will shrink with every wash. Aim for clothing that is part cotton, part something else. Also don't be afraid to check the label and see the textiles. Don't drop a lot of money on clothing that feels like it's made of silk but really it's made of rayon.
Keep A Lookout for the Sales
You don't want to be that person that ends up buying something full price the day before the item is marked down. Always keep an eye out for any sort of promotion (email, poster, etc.). Also familiarize yourself with the stores that have trademark sales. Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale, which is known for offering brand-new fall styles at discounted prices, begins July 17 (Nordstrom cardholders get early access beginning the 9th). Victoria's Secret's Semi-Annual Sales occur every June and December and is said to mark down up to 70 percent on a variety of items.
Invest, Invest, Invest
My philosophy has always been to invest in your clothing. I don't mean go splurge on some statement piece that you'll probably wear once and never again. I believe in investing in staple pieces for your wardrobe. Staple pieces vary from individual to individual. For me, my must-haves are a good pair of leggings, basic tees, and a jacket. I've always believed that if you're going to get a lot of wear out of something, you might as well invest in something higher quality that will last you longer.
Always Check the Seams
The seams are almost always a dead-giveaway as to whether an article of clothing is either good or bad quality. Check the seams--particularly around the underarm and shoulder area. Is the stitching even and tight? Is there fraying of any sort (assuming that it isn't the style)? Are there tears? Don't be afraid to pull on the seam gently. If it looks like the product is about to fall apart, it's probably not something you want to purchase.
Neutrals for Layering
Whenever I go shopping for layering pieces, I always try to stick to neutral colors. For me, layering is typically throwing a pullover sweater over a shift dress, maybe a jacket if it gets colder, and sometimes even an infinity scarf with riding boots and knee-high socks. Of course, a fun patterned cardigan or sweater can be great find every once and a while. But inevitably, you're going to get more wear out of something less loud.
Love It or Leave It
This one might seem like a no-brainer. But as a final remainder, never buy something that you don't fall in love with immediately. If you put it on in the dressing room and have doubts about it, it's not worth it. I know it sucks to leave the mall empty handed, but it'll be worthwhile when your closet is filled with pieces that you're obsessed with.
