A Grown-Up Letter To Santa

Dear Santa,

I haven't written to you in a while and I'm sorry for that, but thank you for all that you've done for me in the past. You've really turned out some really amazing presents in the past few years.

For instance, the Playmobil doll mansion was amazing and I played with that thing well into my early teens. We still have it in the attic somewhere. I want to save it to give to my kids someday.

There was also the year that I got Scout after years and years of begging my dad for a puppy. Dad told me how you had to sit on his lap in order to make that happen, so thank you.

Thank you for the Tamagotchi, iPod shuffle, regular iPod, and my first cell phone.

Thank you also for some wonderful Christmases. I think that it's really nice how you jumped into the modern world with the online Santa Tracker. It was especially entertaining to watch that during the evening of Christmas Eve and it really helped our parents with making sure that we went to bed at a decent time. They took care of the Christmas Eve presents for you and we always got a new pair of Christmas pajamas every year.

Thank you for eating our sugar cookies that we made for you every year, although I think that they were more icing than cookie. Thank you also for drinking the milk. Dad told us some years how you needed a coke instead of a glass of milk, so I hope that you enjoyed that too.

Thank you for filling our stockings to the brim and packing presents under our leaning Christmas tree. Thank you for always leaving something for the dog too. (We have a cat now as well who really likes fluffy cat toys, FYI.) Thank you for making sure that my brother and I got an equal number of presents so that there would be no fighting or tantrums.

It's been 21 years and I have yet to receive any coal, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that I'm on the nice list this year too. With that in mind, here's what I want for Christmas:

- a new vacuum for my dorm room (There are four girls living in the dorm and we shed hair more than four cats.)

- some restaurant gift cards (Preferably to Panera, Starbucks, or Chili's. I'm a college student and I can't afford to eat out a lot.)

- a working shower

- an acceptance letter to law school

- many scholarships to go with the acceptance letter to law school

- some fun, easy (but not too easy) classes for the spring semester

- a really awesome internship for the summer

- taxes and loan paperwork done

I have just reviewed my list and I realized that I am now an adult. In response, please also leave me something that is sparkly, pink, and that takes my father all of Christmas Eve night to assemble--in other words, something that a child would ask for.

Sincerely,

Madison J. Thomas

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
