Any only child knows that it can get lonely not having someone your own age to spend time with. But, that's what cousins are for! I am an only child, but I have seven first cousins, and 13 second cousins (and one more on the way). My parents had me later in life, so I grew up with my second cousins. I spent a lot of time with adults and I actually enjoy spending time with people older than me, but it is always nice to have someone your own age to understand you and share interests.
The first thing I love about having a big family is that they live close by. The farthest distance any of my cousins live from me is about 30 minutes. But, we see each other quite often. We try to have small get-togethers at least once a month. We will have a dinner and celebrate all the birthdays that month! Not only do we get to see each other, but we get to eat great food and have one big party, rather than a bunch of small parties we might not all make it to.
Another benefit to having a large amount of cousins is someone always has your back. If you have a bad day, they’re there to listen and help anyway. If you are sick, they’re there to lift your spirits. If there is an event you are hosting, they’re there to support you. No matter what, you can count on them. And you would do the same for them. That’s what family is for!
Vacations are always better with cousins by your side. Every summer, a group of my cousins, aunts, grandma, mom, and I go on a long weekend trip. We have gone to the Mall of America and Mackinac Island, and hope to go to on many more! We have so much fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.
These trips have also gotten me closer to my family, more than I might be otherwise! It gives us time to get to know one another better and learn more and more! As for holidays, there is never a dull moment. We all get join in on the festivities by making a dish (kind of like a potluck dinner) and bringing a gift for some present swapping games.
I love my big family! Sometimes it's crazy and hectic to spend time as a whole, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. I also can’t thank my cousins enough for being the siblings I never had and for the memories we share.
Like "Lilo And Stitch" once said, “Ohana means family. And family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.”
This is my family’s motto. We will always be there for one another and never forget anyone. My family is the best part of my life and I’m blessed to have them!
