The ABCs Of Growing Up In New England

You've got a helluva lot of pride... and Tom Brady is only responsible for like 75% of that pride.

Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont (no, not New York) - the great states that make up New England. New England is pretty well known for certain aspects, and if you grew up in one of these states, you know the ABCs on New England all too well.

Apple Picking

If you grew up in New England you have almost certainly gone apple picking, pumpkin picking, blueberry picking, or just have gone to some orchard during the fall to take photos. Fall in New England is beautiful and not complete without an apple cider doughnut and some LL Bean boots.

Boston

Ah, of course, our city. Most New England-ers just refer to Boston as "the city" or "Beantown," but we all can agree that nothing beats a day on Newbury Street or a walk through Faneuil Hall.

Chowda

Clam. Chowder. Overwise known as "chowda" or basically a New England specialty. If you're from New England, you know what good chowder is (and you know it's not from New York...).

Dunks

Okay, I know the slogan is "America Runs on Dunkin" but Boston has a mild to extreme addiction to "Dunks." Most people in New England can't go the day without their Dunks' and may even get confused when someone refers to it as "Dunkin Donuts."

Eating

New England is filled with amazing restaurants and famous dishes. We've got great food and we're sure gonna eat it!

Football

Whether its professional or town to town rivalries, football in New England is extremely cherished and is a part of our culture.

"GOAT" isn't an animal...

Anywhere else, a "goat" is fury animal. In New England however, a "goat" is our pride and joy... Mr. Tom Brady, aka the "Greatest Of All Time" aka everyone's husband.

Harvard

Just felt like this had to be added because YES we have one of the most well known and highly ranked universities right over in Boston! We're all kinda proud of that. Go, Harvard.

Ice Cream (from Ben & Jerry's)

Created in Vermont, Ben & Jerry's ice cream is a treasure, and New England-ers never take that for granted.

Jimmies

Speaking of ice cream, we aren't totally sure what "chocolate sprinkles" are, but if you mean "jimmies" then yes we'd love some on our cup of Ben & Jerry's!

Kickoff

The best time of the week.

Lobster

Another favorite because let's face it, lobster (aka "lobsta") is just better in New England. Don't even get me started on (overpriced but worth-it) lobster ROLLS.

"Make Way for Ducklings"

If you grew up in New England, you most likely read this classic about the mallards who live in the Public Garden in Boston.

Nantucket

A popular summer getaway- Nantucket the perfect place to escape, shop, and sleep on the beach.

Ocean

With a coastline as our playground, many kids who grew up in New England know how lucky it is to spend a weekend at the beach.

Pats

Pats nation. Pats everything. New England is basically revolved around the Patriots. It's not just a team here, it's a way of life.

Quakers

And no... I am not talking about the Oatmeal.

Really aggressive drivers...

Maybe it's the cold weather that makes us mad, or maybe we just don't have time to deal with slow drivers. Either way, drivers in New England are fast and furious. Pushy and bossy wins the race.

Snow

Snow days, snow forts, snow plows, Nor'easters, you name it, we've got plenty! We get so used to snow in New England that a winter without snow days is a winter we need to be concerned about.

Tea Party, Boston

That history lesson hit a little bit close to home.. if you know what I mean.

Unpredictable Weather

These four seasons are wonderful, but anything but ordinary. We could have one day where air conditioners are on full blast and the next day we need to bring out the winter jackets.

Vineyard

Another popular summer spot- Martha's Vineyard. Growing up in New England, you probably knew a kid or two who summered on the "vineyard" and yes, you may have rolled your eyes but also secretly were jealous...

Wicked

Okay, so the stereotypes may or may not be true... YES, we say wicked. Most of us don't even realize we're saying it, but it's just a part of our vocabulary. Sorry, not sorry.

(Si)x Flags

Six Flags New England is a MUST. It's like a sort of heaven for energetic kids who grew up in New England, and if you could get your mom to take you... you were one lucky kid.

You find 20 degrees just kinda "chilly"

The freezing temperatures become normal to you when you grow up in New England. 20 degrees? Just grab a bigger jacket and get on with your day!

You're proud to be from New England! Oh... Z!

Okay, so there's no Z here... it's harder than you think! But yes, when you're from New England- you've got a helluva lot of pride... and Tom Brady is only responsible for like 75% of that pride.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
