Don't Pity The Military Brat

Why I will always be thankful to be a military brat.

As I have written before, being a military brat comes with some unique problems. However, never once have I wished for a different life. When I turned 10, I joyfully went to get my ID (a major moment in any military brat's life). I moved 10 times before turning 17, endured two deployments and have seen countless places -- all thanks to the US Air Force.

That is why I find it incredibly offensive, and take it personally, when I hear people speak ill of our men and women in uniform. I especially take offense when I listen to them speak negatively of this life that I have come to love so dearly.

Just this past April, durning an episode of "Teen Mom 2," Jo Rivera was discussing with his then-girlfriend how he felt about the fact that his ex-girlfriend was married to a man in the military, making his son a military brat.

Now, Jo is entitled to this opinion, and I understand that he is concerned for his son. He is correct in saying that having a loved one be gone for long periods of time is really hard. However, as someone who has gone through two deployments, I can testify that while the person might not be physically present, the miracle of technology means that they are not "in and out of your life"

People may think that military kids are not as smart as other kids, that we live unstable lives, or that we don't deserve to move as much as we do or live the life that we do.

Here is what the military life has given me. It has given me the opportunity to attend three high schools that allowed me to meet amazing people. It has taught me how to be independent and how to say goodbye. I have learned how to live in different countries and how to navigate in places where people speak another language. It taught me manners. It created my work ethic and a sense of patriotism that runs deep. I will forever be thankful for this life I have been given. The question is, will you stand alongside military children and support them?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
