My household consists of five people: my dad, my mom, my two younger brothers and me. Since my mom and I are the only two females in the house, we sometimes like to think we rule the roost but because we're outnumbered, we are naturally at a loss. Our house is full of hockey bags, lacrosse equipment, TVs constantly on the ESPN channel, and "Call of Duty" marathons on the Xbox. But I'm not complaining, I love my brothers and all the experiences we've shared together. Growing up with only brothers has taught me a lot about the male mind and how they operate their day-to-day lives. It has also taught me to be strong and independent and I wouldn't change this setup for the world.
Here's what I've learned about growing up in a household of brothers! Keep in mind that that this is just my experience.
1. Guys are simple, straightforward, and don't overanalyze situations like girls do.
If you ask how their day was and they respond with a boring "it was good," they simply mean that it was good and that's the end of that.
2. Guys eat anything and everything.
All guys love food and it's true that one way to a man's heart is through his stomach! Two plates later and they're still hungry for more. It will be lunchtime and my brothers will be asking my mom about what's for dinner. I've learned that if I want a good helping of dinner that I need to be in the kitchen before my brothers and dad scarf it all down.
3. In general, guys measure many aspects in life in terms of wins or losses.
That's the competitive nature in them! A "win" is an ego boost and guys feed their confidence off of those little wins or successes in life.
4. Guys can be immature but at the end of the day, they are loyal, protective, and have big hearts.
Both of my brothers often find gross, immature things comical. "Ted" is one of their favorite movies and it's about a grown man's talking teddy bear... if that helps you understand their sense of humor. But they are also very dependable and loving when they need to be! I can remember a couple times when I was in a funk and they both came by my side, tried to make me feel better, and laugh. At the time, I didn't find their stupid jokes funny but knowing that they are always there for me makes me happy and realize what's important.
5. Guys don't worry about what others think about them or at least not to the extent that girls do.
Screw the haters, just be yourself and don't think about what other people think of you. My brothers have taught me to not worry about how others perceive me and to keep my head held high.
I am forever thankful for my brothers, Gibson and Henry, who will always remind me that guys are interesting creatures who bring a lot of happiness to our lives.
