So I know I said in the last article that friends are hard to find and I still haven't found my squad and all that but it's amazing what one week will do. Wednesday (December 7th), was my 20th birthday and it was my first time being away from my family. I mean we met up and had lunch together, which was great but it just wasn't the same. Not going to lie, I was a little bummed. The middle of the day kind of lagged and then that night I went to the women's and men's basketball games with my roommate, Dennae, and one of my friends from down the hall, Cori. Later that night they ended up throwing me a surprise party with a bunch of people and it made me realize just how many friends I have here. How many people have actually been there for me, with me, all semester. Over the course of a week, I have found my squad. As of right now, it consists of five members: Cori, Dennae, Greg, Ici, and myself.

Let's start with Greg. Everybody knows Greg. He is a sophomore baseball player here at Truett-McConnell University. He is one of the loudest, funniest people I have ever met. He is also very respectful and he loves Jesus and he's the kind of person that you feel like you can depend on if you were ever in trouble. And let's not forget his dance moves. Greg is an AMAZING dancer and everyone knows that if you want to get pumped for a volleyball game, a basketball game, or even just the day all you have to do is just find Greg.

Ici is not only my friend and fellow squad member but she is also one of my teammates, which makes being together even better because we not only bond as team members but also grow as friends and sisters-in-Christ. Ici is very forthcoming. She's the kind of girl that'll be real with you. Like if you're doing something stupid she'll tell you. If you're an awful singer (like myself) but you think you can sing, she'll tell you straight. Even if you don't know how to write a text message properly she'll make sure to give you some pointers. But she is also a beautiful, funny, sarcastic, INCREDIBLY talented singer who is one of the best advice givers I know.

Cori. Y'all this girl right here is one of the greatest girls I've ever met. It's taken us a while to get to the point where we're at but I'm so glad that we are here now. She is my homegirl, my rant partner, my dance instructor, and one of the people that I hope to be friends with my entire life. She is so gorgeous and kind and the kind of girl that won't take crap from anybody. She is also a great singer, an even better dancer, and an amazing friend. I can't tell y'all how much I'm going to miss her when she leaves this semester. I love you, Coco. I'll always be just a phone call away.

I don't even know where to begin with Dennae to be honest. My very first college roommate. I've been told that you never forget your first roommate and I know for a fact I will never forget mine. When I first met Dennae, the first thing that came to mind was, "This chick is crazy!" But as we got to know each other more and more I came to realize that I was just as crazy as she was. We got to know each others favorite food, favorite pair of pants, favorite kind of music and more. Over the course of the semester, we grew closer and closer together. She is my sister from another mister, my little chocolate drop, Nae Nae to some, dread head to others, but she will always be one of my best friends. This school won't be the same to me without you, Dennae. I'm going to miss you so much once you go back home, but I understand. You were brave to come all the way here from Mizzou. I'm going to miss our late night talks/rants, our dance parties, and all our jam sessions. I love you so much and I'll always be here for you.

I am so blessed to have these wonderful people in my life. These people right here have blessed me in so many ways and I can't wait to see what the future holds for all of us.

To the squad, our group may just be beginning but I hope and pray that it'll last for years to come. I love y'all.

Your whitest-black friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
