Greyson Chance. You heard his single "Outside the Lines" way before you actually laid eyes on him on the Ellen show. Aside from Justin Bieber, he was the first male singer you mistook for a girl. Then he popped out an album featuring "Hold on Till Tonight" and "Unfriend You." Where the unfaithful Ariana Grande played his love interest in his music video. Ariana Grande is doing just fine, but what about Greyson?
The little singer/pianist dropped off the face of the earth for five years without so much as a wave goodbye, not that we missed him and his catchy cookie cutter music.
Well, I have been keeping tabs on this nomad enough to know that he was adamant about making his own music, his own way. After a long road back to glory (exclusively on sound cloud), Greyson has proved that time is exactly what an artists needs to find his sound.
He has reinvented himself into an older more mature fellow that has grown into a deeper voice that at times almost becomes raspy. But I must say that he can hit many pleasantly high notes. A remnant from his cookie cutter days perhaps?
On his new EP cover "Somewhere Over my Head" he looks back at the camera in a Motel 86 like parking lot at dusk with Los Angeles palm trees and electricity lines framing the background. His name and the initials of his EP at the four corners of his album are all crossed out. The EP's cover expresses an attitude that seems to say , "You thought you were done with me, but you aren't. I'm not a guidable choir boy anymore; I make my own decisions."
I counted three amazing and two okay songs and for the sake of efficiency, I will only write about the best.
1. Back on the wall
The only issue I have is the content of his glass. Your' e nineteen Greyson, that better be apple juice. Cars, fancy houses, and flattering angled shots, nothing I haven't seen before, but the song is something else entirely.
2. Hit and run
The beginning almost sounds like a slow comfortable rap, then his soul really kicks in to over drive when he sings "Don't call me something I'm not..." Then it turns into the harmonious synth pop that we all like from time to time.
3. After Life
Again I think that the content might be a little old for him, but obviously he gets this, because his songs are 100% original.
