Last month, Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie Torres on ABC's long-running prime time show, Grey's Anatomy, tweeted "that's a wrap" with several hashtags indicating that Dr. Torres was leaving Seattle Grace. Fans were still unsure because Sara also added the hashtag Season 13.
Sara Ramirez was first seen on the show in the second season as a love interest for George O'Malley. She joined the cast as a series regular the following season and has been on the show ever since. During her ten years on the show, Dr. Torres became one of the first LGBTQ characters on prime time television, opening the door for more diverse characters. She realized her sexuality and stood up to her less than accepting parents.
Over the last decade fans watched as Callie married George O'Malley in a spontaneous Vegas wedding, dated Erica Hahn before marrying Arizona Robbins, got pregnant by Mark Sloan and almost lost her life and Sofia's in a car accident. A very tame life for a doctor at Grey Sloan Memorial.
This past Thursday the Grey's Anatomy season 12 finale aired and fans everywhere watched as Sara Ramirez's character, Callie Torres ended her 10 year run on the show. The later half of the season saw Arizona and Callie in a nasty custody battle over their daughter, which ended with Arizona getting full custody of Sofia.
The end of the finale showed Arizona at Callie's door with Sofia, two plane tickets to New York, and a plan to share custody. Her exit followed a post-Sara Ramirez made saying goodbye to Callie Torres.
Following the episode both Shonda Rhimes and Sara Ramirez tweeted about Callie Torres' exit from the show, pointing out that they left the option open for Dr. Torres to return in the future. Although that may only be wishful thinking for the show's fans.
The show has seen several original characters leave within the last couple of seasons, the first being Cristina Yang moving to Switzerland to take over for Dr. Burke. The other was Patrick Dempsey's iconic Dr. McDreamy following a car accident and a fatal mistake at a smaller hospital.
The other cast members contracts also expired this season, negotiations are still in the works for new ones. Fans are left to wonder if any other series regulars will not be returning when the season premiere airs in the fall.
Fans of the show were sad to see Callie Torres leave. Her character made television history and she will be missed.
