* CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD *
After the atrocious end to Season 11, in which McDreamy was McKilled-Off, "Grey's Anatomy" fans had one collective thought: "What can you possibly do next season to make up for this?" If Shonda Rhimes has enough creative juice in her to tie up "Grey's Anatomy" in any semblance of a satisfying way after killing off our male protagonist since Season One, then by all means, Shonda, go for it! But if this season premiere is any indication of whats ahead of us, I'd prepare for disappointment, folks.
In my opinion, a part of what made "Grey's Anatomy" such a hit early on was its fast-paced drama. "Grey's Anatomy" has slowly but surely taken a turn—a slow, unsatisfying turn to unsatisfyingly slow drama.
Granted, what one will find watching "Grey's Anatomy" will not compare to "House of Cards," "House," "Game of Thrones," or any of the like. The difference in substance and depth is sure—for God's sake, there's been a car crash, a plane crash, a bomb, a shooting, a tornado, countless characters killed or written off, and I'm sure I've forgotten something. You could always rely on "Grey's" to supply you with any type of emotional conflict, but now the supply as well as demand is in short order.
While I may sound uber critical of Shonda right now, I was impressed with some factors of this premiere episode, like the sisterly position that Meredith, Maggie, and Amelia find themselves in (while it still is no replacement for the twisted sisterhood of Meredith and Christina or even Meredith and Lexi) and the crazy patient positions Rhimes presents us with. In this debut episode, she featured two young gay girls who attempted to commit suicide via train so they could avoid separation via a Christian conversion camp. The creative components are still there in writing but in acting and interpersonal relationships, I really do find it still lacking.
Don't get me wrong! I'm still in Shonda Rhime's corner... but I definitely will not be surprised to find it a roomy corner.
But for now,
R.I.P.
