You Know You Grew Up in Cold Spring, NY When...
Becky Fifield

Right along the edge of the Hudson River lies the little village of Cold Spring, New York. Established in the late 1840's, Cold Spring has an abundance of history. This little town yields hundreds of tourists who flood Main Street every weekend and, during the summer, most weekdays. Most of Main Street is made up of local Mom and Pop stores, antique shops, and locally owned restaurants, which is what makes Cold Spring such an attraction aside from it's well preserved 19th-century style buildings.

But besides the tourist population, Cold Spring is home to around 2,000 people (more or less). Living in such a small town, and probably going to the same school, everyone has shared at least one experience. If you grew up in Cold Spring, some, or all, of these points will sound pretty familiar.

1. You've Scooped the Loop

People from out of town just don't understand. You can't just go to Cold Spring and not Scoop, it's pretty much etched into the minds of most, if not all, people who've grown up here.

2. You Went to Haldane

Bonus points if you went before the new High School building was finished. Now with two buildings on the campus, K-8 stays in the lower building, and 9-12 stays predominately in the high school building aside from electives or lunch. Mostly everyone who lives or has lived in Cold Spring has gone there, and whoever isn't old enough to go yet, will probably end up going there.

3. You've Attended the Junior Firefighter Academy

Since beginning in 2002, over 500 students ages 8 to 13 have graduated. Are you one of them?

4. You spent many after school days at Cold Spring Pizza

and were always warmly welcomed by Charlie. May he rest in peace.

5. You're overly excited for any and all sports teams that make it to states.

Even if you don't pay attention to it all season, it's still exciting. And when we win (because we do, 99.9% of the time), you'll boast about it for years.

6. You or someone you know is part of either North Highlands or Cold Spring Fire Department and/or a member of the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Thank you.

7. You've gone swimming at Little Stony Point

Also known as Sandy Beach. I mean almost everyone who has even visited Cold Spring has gone there, but we live there so..

8. You get almost offended when someone says "Cold Springs"

Just no. Seriously.

9. Most times you have to say "do you know where (nearest big city) is?" and then explain the location from there.

Or "it's about an hour north of NYC". LOOK AT A MAP.

10. You've attended at least one of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival shows

11. You remember when Perks Plaza was Perks Plaza and not Philipstown Plaza.

If it's not broken, why fix it? THANK GOD B&L Deli is still there though.

12. There was no such thing as a Dunkin Donuts in town.

*sigh*

13. Even though the tourists bring a lot of business, you hated going into town on weekends.

Just too crowded.

14. You've attended the Christmas Tree lighting at the Gazebo.

and have probably taken a picture similar to this at some point.

15. It's hard to go out without seeing someone you know.

Perks of living in a small town, I guess.

16. And no matter where you go in your life, you'll always find your way back to Cold Spring.

Even if it's just for a visit or a scoop through memory lane, Cold Spring will always be a part of you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
