Greenlight A Vet: How To Honor Our Veterans Every Day

Veterans are a special part of our community. They're people, just like you and me, but they have made a sacrifice to protect others. My grandfather was a naval captain in World War II, and I grew up overseas with a lot of friends whose parents were veterans, so I have a huge amount of respect for any current or former member of the military. One thing I think many people struggle with is how to thank our veterans for keeping us all safe and allowing us to live the way we do because of their sacrifices.

People support veterans in different ways. Some give money to charities; others volunteer. My dad goes out of his way to buy meals for any uniformed servicemen and women he sees in the same restaurant as him. The problem is, not all of us have the ability to openly thank our active duty servicemen and women and our veterans, partially because without a uniform on, it's almost impossible to spot them -- they're "more camouflaged than ever." We all want to be able to show our appreciation, but most of us have no idea how.

That's exactly what Walmart's Greenlight a Vet program is all about. They're encouraging everyone to change one light outside their house to a green lightbulb in honor of our veterans, as green is the color of "hope, renewal, and well-being." The theory behind it is that even though we aren't always able to see our veterans, they can always see our appreciation. There's not always going to be a heart-warming welcome video or a tell-tale sign that someone's a veteran. Walmart's program is a great way for people who don't have much to give to support veterans.

Just because Veterans Day has passed, it doesn't mean we should stop thanking our veterans. The green light allows people to continue thanking veterans long after the official day has passed. So change a light to green and show your support to those who have put their lives on the line for our safety. And thank you, veterans, for everything you've done to ensure we can live safely and comfortably.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
