For those of you who don't know, Greek Week is here for SFA! To some, this may just look like a lot of people getting together in all their favorite Greek gear with painted bodies and playing games. However, it is about a lot more than that for a lot of us. Greek Week is all about coming together as a Greek Community to support one another, and remembering why we all decided to go Greek in the first place.
Every Greek member has their moments where they start to wonder why they decided to go Greek. Maybe it's because they're having a rough week or because times are difficult at the moment, but it happens. I can't speak for everyone, but whenever these moments do happen, it seems almost instantly that a reason appears.
In honor of Greek Week, I wanted to touch on the things that make me proud to be a Greek (and Panhellenic) woman. Had someone asked me as a freshman in high school if I would have joined a sorority, I probably would've laughed and asked, "Do you even know me?"
But since that time in my life, many other things have happened that continued to move me toward going into Greek life. For starters, I was terrible in social situations (and I really still am) but by going Greek, I was "forced" to speak out. And refreshingly, I was heard.
I was welcomed into a sisterhood that was interested in my thoughts and opinions and even something as meaningless as how my day was. I was shown a group of people who asked how my classes were going and if I needed tutored. I was introduced to girls who helped me meet even more people.
Girls who said, "Let's go out dancing tonight!" Even when I really didn't feel like it. And guess what? I had the time of my life.
Secondly, I get to meet people from all over. During break, I just happened to be sitting at a restaurant, right next to a girl from a different chapter of my sorority. We instantly began talking like old friends, asking things like, "What's it like on campus there? How many girls are in your chapter? What's your house like? What's your major? What year are you?"
Looking back, I never would've been able to have an open conversation with a perfect stranger like that beforehand.
Thirdly, I've met my role models in my Greek life. I have to opportunity to see so many successful woman doing what they love to do. And these opportunities and doorways were opened by their being Greek!
Lastly, something that I love being able to do with my chapter is discuss my troubles. I am able to tell my thoughts to a group of people who I know I can trust whole-heartedly. I can tell them the struggles I am facing. And when I look around (and I know this sounds cliché) I can literally see them feeling the same pain that I am; I can see their empathy. Not to mention, I can tell them my troubles, and they will just come to hug me, to tell me they love me, and that they care.
If you’re on the fence about becoming Greek, or you’re having trouble remembering why you became involved in Greek life, I hope these things helped you.
AND HAPPY GREEK WEEK TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!
