Go Greek! Go Second Semester Recruitment

A poem about the advantages of rushing in the spring.

Go Greek! Go Second Semester Recruitment
Julia Mangan

T’was the night before college and all through every 18-year-old's brain,

Every emotion was stirring, with bad dreams on replay.

The car was packed with only enough room to spare

For one nervous girl to sit in the reserved driver's chair.

Her parents were pacing together in their room

Wondering would their daughter make friends, and would she make them real soon?

With mom on her iPad and dad just lying flat,

They also kind of wondered: would the food make her fat?

When she pulled up to school on that hot August day,

She wished she was three and someone would ask her to play.

Unfortunately, she’s 18, not three anymore,

And was left wondering what college had in store.

Her room was set up and the bed made real nice,

Please, she hoped, don’t let the dorm room get mice.

“Sup?”

Thus, the random roommate showed up.

She gives her time to settle her things

And out in the hallway the floor monitor sings:

"Welcome to campus! I hope your day is going great!

By the way, girls, we have a floor meeting at 8!"

Her parents say goodbye and when the hugs finally end,

Their young girl goes off in search of a friend.

So many faces pass by, where should she go first?

Well luckily, she goes to Rockhurst.

“Activities were all planned out ahead,”

According to what the orientation coordinators said.

“See over there by that door?

All you need to do is to be there by four.”

Orientation flew by

And, tired, she let out a sigh,

What would she do with all her time now?

She wanted to join some clubs, but how?

She scouted out information the very next day,

And learned of the organizations to join if she may.

Then, without even thinking it through,

The young girl went off and signed up for a few.

She went to their meetings and took interest in some,

But no offense to the others, she thought they were quite dumb.

All she wanted was to make a new friend,

And these clubs were just her means to an end.

Her first semester went by very fast,

Before she knew it, Thanksgiving had passed.

She studied hard for all of her final tests,

And when it came time, she gave them her best.

She then returned home to enjoy Christmas break

But looking back, not one good friend did she make.

Although she thought first semester was fun,

If a friend wasn’t made soon, with Rockhurst she’d be done.

But she shouldn’t worry because if there’s a will

Sorority recruitment is left for her still.

And so she signed up, for where there’s a will there’s a way,

And she made the best of her friends right then on Bid Day.

Second semester recruitment might seem annoying at first,

But it's done that way at many schools, including Rockhurst.

You join many things on your first few days.

But think about it. How many of them have actually stayed?

You make a few mistakes, but learn from them all.

What would it be like, though, if you had rushed in the fall?

Moving away from home and college life changes you a lot,

And this happens to everyone whether you realize it or not.

You probably bit off more things than you could chew,

So in the end you spit out quite a few,

And while some firsts were good, and they honestly might,

Usually a first does not turn out right.

You sat down and you took it all in,

And although it sometimes made your head spin,

You learned more about you and what you like,

And, in your head, you told the others to go take a hike.

So when winter break finally comes to a close,

And you’re so excited to see where recruitment goes,

While you should be ready to face some plot twisters,

I can’t stress enough how much you’ll love your new sisters.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
