It's that time of year again: Greek formal recruitment time! Greek students are getting ready to meet all of the new students coming to college and hopefully convince them to join up in the Greek family. If you are not Greek, you have probably heard a little bit about Greek life from a friend, family member, or even your school's social media accounts. But, you're still confused. What is all the hype about joining a sorority or fraternity? It seems like every sorority woman or fraternity man is working so hard to make sure each student knows about their organization. But, you wonder, what is so great about "going Greek?"
As a proud sorority member and part of the Greek family at my university, I write to you in hopes that each of you consider going through Greek formal recruitment this Fall. I cannot stress how much joining a sorority has changed my life for the better, and I know it will change yours if you make that choice. Being part of a Greek organization is much more than meets the eye. It is not just about getting to wear letters around campus on a t-shirt or getting to take selfies "throwing what you know." Being Greek means having an everlasting support system. Your sisters or brothers will be there for you in any situation when you need them. The Greek family is very strong at every university as well. Not only do you have your sisters or brothers who wear the same letters as you, but your whole Greek family from all other Greek organizations on your campus. Greek life also emphasizes philanthropy and helping deserving causes. Greeks raise abundant amounts of money every year for various causes. Greek life also creates academic success in students, because each Greek is required to make certain grade point averages in order to continue their membership in their organization. With that, being Greek is not four years, but for life. After graduation, sisters and brothers still stay in touch and are friends forever. They share a bond that is unbreakable through their respective organizations.
In conclusion, I once again hope this article has encouraged and maybe even convinced many of you to sign up for your school's formal recruitment. Going Greek will better your college life as a whole, and I can attest to this as well as many others who joined a sorority or fraternity. If you are on the fence about formal recruitment and need more details about it, be sure to check out your university's Greek website. Usually they will have recruitment information that can greatly help each student. Remember, going Greek can help make a large campus seem small, and give a student a family away from home. Go Greek! You will not regret it!
