The cinematic world is full of choices. We have many genres, periods, subjects and styles to choose from. However, some choices are a little more obscure than our classics. These cult films and more obscure pieces are definitely worth watching. So with that (and without spoilers), here are some wonderfully weird movies that all people should watch and enjoy at least once:
1. Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a low-budget cult film from the 1970s whose popularity still manifests itself in midnight showings and live performances 40 years after its initial release. The film takes on a new meaning for young people growing up in a time where homosexuality, transgender and other LGBT groups are becoming more visible and slowly more accepted. It's wacky and fun, so if you haven't lost your virginity already, go do it now.
2. The Big Lebowski
Describing the plot of the Big Lebowski feels impossible. It stars Jeff Bridges as The Dude, our chill hero just trying to get his rug back. The first time you see it, you may think you're missing something, or there's something you just don't get. Don't overthink it. Just remember that the Dude abides.
3. Heathers
Imagine Mean Girls' dark-humored older sister. It's black humor dressed as a chick flick. Heathers is controversial for its seemingly humorous take on the subject of suicide, but its that dark comedy that makes it so great.
4. Clockwork Orange
This is Stanley Kubrick's master big-screen take on the original Anthony Burgess novel. The central question of the film is what makes a good person; does the absence of ability to do bad make a person good, or not a person at all? Everything from the Nadsat dialogue to the other-worldly sounding soundtrack and onscreen violence that is still-discussed adds to this masterpiece.
5. Donnie Darko
It is likely you will have to watch this movie multiple times just to understand what actually happened, let alone why or how. Even so, you will likely enjoy it every time. Extremely quotable, dark, confusing, and includes a 6 foot tall terrifying bunny named Frank; what more could you ask for?
6. Reefer Madness
This movie is hilarious because at the time it was made, it was 100 percent serious. Most of us know by now that marijuana is not necessarily the most dangerous substance one can come across. Like Rocky Horror, this a cult film that is still widely-popular today. So remember kids, don't smoke the marijuana or you'll play awesome jazz piano. PS, the 2005 musical remake is also hilarious
7. Labyrinth
The plot of this movie is often overshadowed by David Bowie's private parts on full-display for the length of the movie (you think I'm kidding. I promise you I'm not). It's one of those "so bad it's good" movies. If you are looking for extra comedy, google what happened to the Hoggle puppet after the making of the movie. You won't regret it.
8. Un Chien Andalou
Un Chien Andalou is the original pretentious nonsensical art film. The film is a black and white silent film by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. It's not a long movie, but it's fun to watch and wonder at the meaning of it all. Or laugh at those frustrated with trying to figure it out.
9. The Producers
Have you ever heard of a Broadway play called Springtime For Hitler? If you have, then you already know why this movie is excellent. A washed-up Broadway producer and perpetually nervous accountant try to get rich quick by producing the worst Broadway show in the history of theater. One can never tire of classic comedy.
10. Cabin In The Woods
Usually people who don't like Cabin in the Woods are those who don't understand it. It's a horror movie about horror movies, and created to make you think about the genre. It's self-awareness and comedic scenes are part of what make it so great. This is a must-see for any die-hard horror fans who are sure to have a true appreciation for it.
