I want to start off by stating that having a best friend is something special. You don't have to spend every waking moment together, or talk everyday. A best friend is someone you connect with on a emotional and mental level. Someone that you can be totally yourself around and you know that no matter what, they will still love you unconditionally. A best friend is someone who will tell you the truth when you need to hear it, but also support you in your endeavors. They are your sidekick. You can go months without talking to them, yet nothing will have changed.
My purpose in writing this letter, to be blunt, is to brag. My best friend is patient. His big elephant ears take in all of my words when I need someone to listen. He waits until I completely empty my mind and does not interrupt. He never gives me an answer, but responds in the form of questions to give me a deeper understanding of my actions and words. My best friend is the kindest man I have ever known. If you are reading this, I hope you know I think you are a selfless, loving person who is compassionate and honest. When I am sad or happy or lonely you are always there. Thank you taking care of me all these years. You have given me my happiest memories.
When I was a little girl you would take me everywhere. We took trips to the bank. I remember to this day, laughing hysterically as you threatened to "gobble me up" when we played monster in the big yard at the old house. You would always let me win. Those times I would watch Jurassic Park in your office while you were playing solitaire on your computer. Those times I would cling to you and refuse to let go. You encourage me and inspire me everyday. Thank you best friend, for pushing me to be the best possible person I can be.
As I slowly got older, I became too big to cling to you. When I turned 16 you taught me how to drive. Eventually when I got my car, we didn’t spend as much time together. Then when I was a senior in high school, you proposed the idea of Sunday breakfast at International House of Pancakes. From then on I could count on you, rain or shine, to be there waiting for me, with coffee in hand, two creams. I would order a waffle and you would order a senior rise and shine with eggs-over-easy. I cherish the moments spent with you. Now that I am in college I miss being home with you and spending time with you, best friend.
What in the world would I do without you. From the day I was born we were connected. We are two halves of a whole. I am so thankful everyday that I have you in my life and that I get to be your granddaughter. I love you Papa, even though you are older than dirt.
