True story: When I was in the third grade, I overheard my friends talking about me when they thought I was out of the room. Everyone knows the horrible feeling of overhearing harsh words being said at your expense. It's one of the worst types of pain -- like, almost as bad as stubbing your toe. So, even as an eight year old, I started to understand just how much weight our words actually carry.
As a writer, I've always loved words and their ability to inspire, encourage, and empower people. Words can be used to fix broken relationships and mend shattered friendships. Our words, when used with discernment and gentleness, can have a tremendous impact on everyone we encounter.
Unfortunately, words are often used as weapons as well, they often destroy reputations, provoke conflict, and ruin relationships. When used with anger and envy, words can bring some serious damage to our lives. Whether it's done behind closed doors or plastered on a billboard, it's evident that our words speak volumes about our character.
Gossip is just one of those ways our words can be used for evil, specifically within the church. In no way is it acceptable for a group of Christians to participate in gossip. For so long, we've tried to justify it. We've disguised rumors as prayer requests, and slander as "it's not gossip if it's the truth." Whether the piece of information is true or false, the fact of the matter is that it's wrong, and we must stop believing the idea that it's okay.
Here's why.
1. Gossip is destructive
It's as simple as that. Nothing good comes from it. Never once has a rumor been used to make a situation better or to encourage someone.
2. It's contradictory to the Bible
Countless times in scripture, Jesus mentions this issue. To non-believers, bad-mouthing Christians are hypocrites and liars -- it does nothing to strengthen our testimonies.
It's so important to remember the influence our words have on others, including non-believers.
3. It tarnishes relationships
No friendship was ever strengthened because of it.
4. It creates conflict
Arguments and disputes often arise because of it. There's enough conflict in the world, why use our words to stir up more?
5. Our words are meant for good, not evil
We have the power to use what we say for the benefit of others. What would happen if we all used our words to encourage and not put down?
Avoiding gossip is by no means simple. It's incredibly easy to fall into the trap and give in. After all, we are all human and fall short mores times than we can count. But with a conscious effort, we can make the world a little brighter when we use our words to do just that.
