As a child, I always cherished and got sucked into the many "Goosebumps" books and movies by R.L. Stine. Some of my favorites were "Welcome to Camp Nightmare," "The Ghost Next Door," and even "One Day at HorrorLand." R.L. Stine had a way of capturing a kid's imagination, and by just writing words on a page, he could take you to a whole other world full of unworldly creatures, horror and, of course, a chill that gives you goosebumps down your spine and in your whole body. These books were scary enough to make the hairs on a kid's arm stick up, but they weren't too scary to scar them for life.
When I first saw the trailer for the new "Goosebumps" movie with Jack Black playing R.L. Stine, I was a little skeptical, but after going with Cassie and McKenna to see it today, I was blown away and was on the edge of my seat the whole movie.
"Upset about moving from the big city to a small town, young Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets his beautiful neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush). The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah's mysterious father is R.L. Stine (Jack Black), the famous author of the best-selling "Goosebumps" series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it's up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong."
Jack Black played an amazing R.L. Stine -- from his shortness, glasses and accent to the humor he brings to the movie. All the creatures from R.L. Stine's books are released into the real world, and as we see all the creatures from the books we cherished before, it makes me reminisce about the thrills I got from reading the books for hours. Even though each and every creature from every book didn't get their close-up on screen, a good majority of them were shown on screen, including Slappy the dummy, the giant praying mantis, the zombies, the werewolf, the invisible boy, the gnomes, and a few other creatures. While other creatures/characters didn't get their time in the spotlight, they all were there in the group of revenge-hungry book characters that attacked the high school. I wish that all of my favorite creatures had been shown more, but I understand that a children's movie can only be so long before you lose a child's attention.
This movie has a good amount of humor between the characters R.L. Stine and Champion, but it also has an unconditional father-daughter bond and a brewing first love in it. Not only will the new "Goosebumps" movie make you reminisce about your childhood, but it will make you laugh and fall in love and the hairs on your arms will raise a little bit. It is the perfect movie to see with your family or friends for Halloween, and you will even catch a glimpse of the real R.L. Stine himself if you look closely enough. I hope this movie gives you goosebumps!
