Last spring semester I changed my major from elementary education to social work and I have to admit, it's the best decision I've ever made. I wake up for class every day excited to learn more about this wonderful profession! There are so many wonderful things about social work. Today I'm just going to tell you some of my favorite things about being a social work major!
The Good.
Perhaps one of my favorite things about being a social work major is the friends I've made within my major. I'm currently the secretary of Social Work Students in Action (SWSA) and I love all the sweet people in that club with me. It is one of the most wonderful feelings when you find someone who shares the same feelings, the same passion, and the same dedication to something. I love being able to talk to other students who love people and social work just as much as I do.
The Better.
Another one of my favorite things is the classes I get to take. I have some of the most amazing professors within my major. I love being able to sit at the feet of some of the most kind, knowledgable, and passionate professors. I love hearing about their experience within the field of social work. Along with having amazing professors, I have amazing classes as well. All it took for me was one day of Intro to Social Work and I knew that this was the major for me. I never find myself bored in my classes. There's always a need concept or a new policy to learn.
The Best.
I've told you about my wonderful social work friends and the awesome classes that I get to take but I finally get to tell you about my absolute favorite part. My absolute favorite part is the future. I told you earlier that I love talking to other people about social work and something I find that always comes up in conversation is our future clients. I cannot wait to be a practicing social worker and change lives.
In the spring of 2015, I began making visits to one of the local assisted living. At the time I was still an education major. The more I began interacting with the residents the more I realized education was the wrong field for me. I still visit that assisted living home and just the other day I was visiting a precious couple with a friend of mine who is also a social work student and she looked at me and said "This is why I want to do social work." My interests have changed a little bit, but never for a moment has my passion left. So to all my fellow work students, keep on keeping on. Our future is bright and we will change lives. To my amazing professors, thanks for instilling in me a passion for social work.
