The thought of studying is probably not your first choice for vacation, but it may be the best decision you make. Taking a summer class is just as productive for college students as it is to work at an internship, get a job, volunteer, or even travel. The best way to make the most of the summer is to get things accomplished! It’s all about your goals and how you plan to best achieve them. If this means you find yourself in a summer course, don't get discouraged. As much as you may not want to hear it there are actually many benefits to consider.
1. Less distractions
Friends, relationships, social events...life happens! It's easy to get distracted during the year and it will be undeniably easier to focus during the summer.
2. You can get ahead on your schedule next semester
Take the prerequisite class you're dreading. It's better to get it over with to be honest.
3. It can boost your GPA
If you got through last semester you can get through the summer. You got this.
4. Less class days compared to during the semester
"Right. Perspective."
5. Smaller class sizes may help you understand better
The professor will actually know your name and seem more approachable during the summer. Ask all the questions your heart desires.
6. You can apply for a summer study abroad
Just an idea! Look into the options for your major and see if it's possible. It will definitely make you feel better about doing the work!
7. It adds a sense of routine to your summer
If it weren't for this class you'd probably still be watching Netflix while eating pizza. Or ice cream. Or both. Not like I'm speaking from experience. #nojudging
8. More flexible structure of classes
Choose what's best for you! Other than staying on campus there are online courses, blended courses, and those at your local college they may accept credits from.
9. Easier to get into classes that usually fill up quickly
You chose your major, might as well take the classes you're interested in.
10. Can get you closer to graduating early
It can happen, I've seen it!
11. You're keeping your brain active
At least you will still remember how to study.
Summer classes aren't for everyone, but if you choose to take one, stay motivated! Keep reminding yourself of the reasons why it will help you. Plus, if it turns out to be more challenging than you expected, you may be helping your brain to develop...or at least that what my Economics teacher keeps telling us.
