Saying goodbye to friends is the hardest part about becoming an adult. Well, that and budgeting, taxes, job responsibilities, you get the point.

So in a world that is so stressful, when you find a good friend, you really hang on. But how do you learn to let go?

I am in the process of saying goodbye to a very dear friend. They recently landed a fantastic job, and that is wonderful. Except it takes them eight hours away from me, and at this point, eight hours feels like opposite sides of the world.

The hardest part about this whole situation is knowing this a good opportunity for them and also feeling heart broken. While this has been a painful experience I have learned that saying goodbye is part of growing up. Honestly, I'd rather not grow up yet. But we all have to and we all have to say goodbye.

Here is how to say goodbye to a friend you never want to leave.

Step One: Allow yourself some time to feel.

Before attempting to say goodbye, you have to allow yourself some time to process what is happening. Allow yourself time to feel upset. If you act while still really emotional, you may say or do things that you will regret. Remember that it isn't only you that is saying goodbye, they're saying goodbye too.

Step Two: Be Supportive.

The hardest thing to do is to support what is good for someone else when it's not good for you. You can find strength and purpose in supporting their decisions. It will allow them some peace of mind knowing that you support their dreams. Offer to help them pack or offer to help pick out curtains for their new place. It may seem silly but helping a friend will help you as well.

Step Three: Be honest with yourself and with them.

Make sure you tell them exactly how you feel about the situation. One thing I said to my friend was "I'm going to miss you like crazy, but I am so happy for you." I am going to miss them but honestly, this is a great experience for them and I'm not going to stop them from reaching for their dreams.

Step Four: Understand that goodbyes are not forever.

While it may seem like they are forever, they are not. You never know who you will bump into at a Walmart in five years. Make plans to see them again. Utilize the internet and Skype sometimes. It will help you feel closer.

Step Five: Don't say goodbye.

Goodbye just sounds to final. Try a different phrase like "until next time" or my favorite, "See you later, alligator."

Remember to be kind to yourself during this time. Reach out to other friends and discuss your feelings. It makes a world of difference.
