So the nominations for the 73rd Golden Globes were announced on December 10, and the Internet was abuzz with who or what was going to win all of the awards. And I have to say, I have a few problems with the snubs of the Globes this year.
First off, this is a personal disappointment (although kind of expected), but nothing for “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”? Really? Like, I know it wasn’t a huge film, but that’s never been a problem for award shows! It was great; it had a nice story, good acting, and great cinematography, especially compared to other indie films in its class. And it spends half of the film talking about classic films, which should be a professional film critic’s dream!
As widely predicted, Sylvester Stallone got a Supporting Actor nomination for “Creed,” but the film itself got no other nominations. How? Additionally, neither Johnny Depp nor Tom Hardy received nominations for their performances in “Black Mass” or “Legend” respectively.
Some of you may be thinking, “Oh, but some of those films just came out and they aren’t really eligible until next year,” on which I would agree with you, except “Joy,” which doesn’t even come out until Christmas, was nominated twice, because David O. Russell is award fodder.
I would also like to bring your attention to the junk drawer that is the Musical or Comedy section. The films nominated this year are: “The Big Short”, “Joy”, “The Martian”, “Spy”, and “Trainwreck”.
Now, as you may have noticed, there are only two comedies or musicals in that section. Why are “The Big Short,” a film about the financial crisis, and “The Martian,” a film about a guy stuck on Mars, in the comedy section? Even if they have some comedic elements, that would justify a film like “Mad Max: Fury Road” being in that section because it contains comedic elements as well.
I mean ...
Despite the fact that they are definitely weaker films, if any of those except for “Spy” or “Trainwreck” wins, then a comedy did not win the “Musical or Comedy” section of the Golden Globes.
(Side note: Some of these films are classified as “drama-comedy.” What in the name of Kubrick is a drama-comedy? Isn’t that just … life?)
Last thing about the Musical or Comedy section, I promise, but there was also no “Pitch Perfect 2” nomination in a year that evidently had some pretty weak comedies?
And to close the film part, the Best Original Song section is kinda lackluster this year. “Fifty Shades of Grey” got their single nomination with Ellie Goulding’s hit “Love Me Like You Do” (Side note: Thanks, Globes; now that song is stuck in my head. Ugh), and the only big competition they have is Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” from “Spectre” and “See You Again” from “Furious 7.”
Calling it now: “See You Again” wins, with a teary-eyed tribute to Paul Walker.
Now, moving on to the television awards:
I like Rob Lowe. He’s great in “Parks and Recreation,” but how did he get nominated for “The Grinder”? And how did Robin Lord Taylor not get nominated for his role as Penguin on “Gotham”?
I mean, I know that I like that show a lot more than a lot of people do, but everyone who has seen that show has been enamored by Taylor’s performance more than anything else. The guy deserves at least a nomination.
Also, if we’re going to junk-drawer the Musical or Comedy section for films, how did “Better Call Saul” not get a nomination? Like, I understand it was nowhere near as good as “Breaking Bad,” but were any of us really expecting the show to be that good in its first season?
(Side note: Bob Odenkirk did get nominated for Best Actor, though, but he’s up against Jon Hamm in the last season of “Mad Men,” which means that Jon Hamm is getting another Globe.)
Smaller and less personal issue: no “Daredevil” nomination? I mean, I have yet to watch it, but everyone says it’s great. I don’t know, I guess I was surprised is all.
A real big issue I have is the lack of Best Animated Show category. I mean, in a time where “Family Guy” and “South Park” and “Bob’s Burgers” and ”Archer” and “Rick and Morty” are all highly watched and popular television shows, how do you not have a Best Animated Show section? The Emmys have a Best Animated Program, why not the Globes? Keep up with the times, man!
I don’t have a good idea for a section for this one, but I just wanted it stated that the music was one of the few things that was really great about “True Detective” Season Two. Lera Lynn is great and I wanted it on record that the music of that show continued to be good into season two.
Also, no Miniseries nomination for “Wayward Pines”? It was actually pretty great. And how does that not get nominated, but “Flesh and Bone” can be, when it just began in November? Justice for Matt Dillon!
(So I just read that “Wayward Pines” is getting a second season, so I guess it’s not a miniseries. But I really hope that’s not true because that show doesn’t need a second season.)
Another small point that doesn’t bother me as much as it surprises me is the lack of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt” nominations. I’ve heard nothing but great things about that show. Where’s the love?
Oh well, I guess we can hope for the Emmys. I sincerely hope they read my expert opinion of being an armchair critic/complainer on the subject, and dutifully take notes.
