While searching out colleges, a majority of students (including myself), searched out colleges that were as far away from home as possible. Quite personally, I wanted to go further than my sister.
But, much to my dismay and my parents happiness, I decided on Marquette University - which is roughly 30 minutes from my house.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love MU and my decision. BUT DUDE. Why did I stay so close?
Cons:
1. Not experiencing a new city.
While all of my friends are out being adventurous and discovering a completely new city, I'm stuck in Milwaukee experiencing something I've always been around.
2. I'm the "know-it-all".
Whenever people want to go get food, they automatically assume that I know where everything is and what delivers to campus and how far everything is. WRONG. I only know about 60% of things in Milwaukee and let me tell you - they're not near campus.
3. I'm usually the smart one when we go out.
My mom always taught me to be hyper-aware of my surroundings. My campus is located near some not-so-good areas and I'm always paranoid about how far we go when exploring the city.
HOWEVER. There are some pretty great things about being close to home.
Pros:
1. Access to a car.
I can go home and pick up my car and go back to campus to drive my friends around and explore.
2. Dogs. Cats. All the animals.
If I'm ever stressed about school or missing my pets - it's amazing how easy it is to go home for a few hours and cuddle with my dogs.
3. I can go home whenever I want.
I've been home 2 times now. Once to go get my car and drop it off. Another time to babysit and make some $$. Which honestly, is a must as a college student who loves clothes.
I'm happy with my decision. Don't let proximity to home sway your college choice. Look at the school and the reputation and how likely getting a job after college is. Proximity to home should not be that important on the list.
