Going Home For The Holidays: Expectations Vs. Reality

During the stressful weeks of finals all you can seem to think about is going home. Going home to your own bed, your mom who doubles as a personal chef, and laziness with nothing to attend to. It seems like a complete dream until you realize the reality of things making you miss your college life a little more than usual.

Expectation: Finally, a month without doing laundry.

Reality: Mom responds with, “you’re in college, you know how to do laundry.”

It is unbelievably hard to keep up with laundry during school so we all look forward to the day where we can unload all of our laundry at home, hoping that our mom misses doing it. But the second you ask her, she responds with, “you’re in college, you know how to do laundry,” while continuing to do your high school sibling’s clothes.

Expectation: When I go home for break, I’m going to catch up with all my high school friends.

Reality: All of the five friends you still have from high school are on vacation.

As the years in college pass, the number of people that you still talk to from high school get less and less. Eventually, every time you come home you find yourself hanging out with your college friends who live in the same area.

Expectation: I’m in college so I can go out as late as I want.

Reality: Mom tries to reset your high school curfew of 12 midnight.

No, Mom.Do you realize how late I usually stay out in college?

Expectation: This next month will really give me the chance to catch up with my siblings.

Reality: You start arguing by the third day.

I miss my siblings as much as the next person, but after a few days we start to get on each other’s nerves and we are suddenly realizing how much we miss our school.

Expectation: I’m going to use this break to start working out.

Reality: Working out turns to running to the fridge before the 20 second Netflix timer runs out.

Re-watches all of "One Tree Hill" in a month, has no shame.

Expectation: Pretty snow falling on Christmas day.

Reality: You live in the South.

On the rare occasions that it does snow, class is canceled, work is canceled and the city is completely shut down due to the "inclement weather."

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
