Cliché, I know. Movies and TV shows make so many plot lines about the geeks, dorks, and the underdogs that, after the whole movie, get the girl/boy. Let us pay tribute to some of the stars that got "Neville Longbottom-ed" while filming in movies and/or TV shows.
This is just the Hollywood version of the power of puberty and facial hair. It happens to everyone.
Some people go to middle school looking disheveled, pimpled, brace faced, and insecure (me being one of them), others are fortunate enough to look amazing throughout their schooling career, (congratulations!) but once the "dorks" go through high school... dang, puberty hits some people like a bus. The braces come off, the faces clear up, and they are more comfortable in their own skin. My mom told me that at her high school reunions the guys in high school that were the "geeks" and "dorks" got muscles, curves, and looked better than ever! And if people wore glasses back in the day and thought they looked "uncool?" No problem! Glasses are totally in, people!
But now, let's get real, beauty is only skin deep. Some people that I went to school with were band nerds and computer geeks... I was a band nerd! They were really cool, genuine people. My boyfriend was (and still is) a video game nerd, had long blonde hair, and was a really shy person. But once he came out of his shell a little bit and we became good friends, he was a pretty cool dude! My point is that it wasn't about the looks (here comes my "don't-judge-a-book-by-its-cover" spiel). It's totally true though! I was just watching a talk by Michelle Obama and she was talking to an auditorium full of girls and said, "If I had worried about who liked me and who thought I was cute when I was your age, I wouldn't be married to the president of the United States today." The kindest people might be the shiest in your class, the most generous have been through the most, and the person who could be the love of your life might be hiding under disheveled hair, braces, and a huge book.
I just want to leave you with one last note. For men and women both, the people who we might find attractive today might not be there tomorrow. It is all about what is inside, who they are as a person, and what they have to offer the world. People who work on computers, and who are into science might make millions one day with the new technology that is coming our way.
Everyone deserves a chance at love. And your knight in shining armor or princess could be sitting across the room with a group of friends talking about "Pokémon," "Skyrim," "GTA," or horses, fairies, and witches. "Geeks," "dorks," and "underdogs" are the coolest people; get to know 'em! You might find your future spouse.
