Adventure. It’s good for you.
College sucks. Think about the perpetuated stereotype of the college kid: broke, tired, Netflix-addicted and swamped with homework. This is probably you on any given day. Life gets so incredibly dragged down with the incessant tests, homework and presentations that accompany the pains of higher learning.
The work gets to be pretty tough. I know that when I am swamped during the school week, I get exceedingly stressed out and touchy from all of the homework that my university shackles me to. I lose my mind in the pursuit of knowledge day in and day out.
School, although difficult, isn’t all that bad. I have made some pretty cool friends and done some pretty cool things while I’ve been in college. When I lose myself during the weekdays, it helps to reclaim my mind on the weekends.
To regain my sanity, I go on adventures to somewhere new or different. It is the journey, experience and connections that I make on my adventures that have taught me a lot about the world that I cannot learn in the classroom.
I remember the first time I went to an abandoned building. It was a giant workhouse that looked like a castle. The twists and turns, hidden nooks and crannies and lofty turrets were stained with beautifully vibrant graffiti. I was free to climb, explore and express my artistry (I am a photographer, and I bring my camera along on my adventures so that I can document the things I encounter), in a way that I cannot in a classroom setting.
The adventure cleared my head and I was addicted. The hunt for abandoned buildings continued on, and I have consequently explored so many other buildings. It gives me the chance to forget about the school, forget about who I am during the week and just exercise my mind and muscles in a really unique way.
Every time I go exploring or adventuring to an unknown place, I take someone with me. I do this for various reasons, but particularly because of the fact that it makes me significantly less vulnerable. It also allows me to be in tune with one of my friends in a manner that is unlike any other that I can encounter them in during the school week.
So adventure. It’s good for you. It helps you forget about college for a second, forget about the exams, the homework, the drama and isolates your mind that is usually driven to madness from homework. Get off of Netflix and get out there. "Grey’s Anatomy" will still be there when you procrastinate next time, I promise. Adventure is calling. Go explore it.
