Although he has the worst hairstyle possible and that at least half of the things he says can, and probably should, be interpreted as inappropriate, I refuse to belittle President-Elect Trump. On the roller coaster of our latest presidential election, the man received an uncanny amount of backlash. He is unfiltered, obnoxious and he is our next President of the Unites States.
The commenting assault slowed until recently when current President Obama delivered a heart-warming goodbye to America. After which, Trump became the punching bag, again. In my 20 years, I've observed a pattern during a president's serving term.
First, the election shines light upon the best and worst (mostly the worst) characteristics of a person. There's an impossible promise to the country and all candidates are called liars, and they probably are. Then comes a rally and "anti-whoever" campaign and plenty of propaganda to sway a person's opinion toward a candidate.
After the country's choice is made, we discuss how "history has been made," followed by how this new president will practically cause the end of all things good in the world. We feel the need to compare the new and terrifying ideas of change of this new guy to the 'ground breaking' and 'amazing' changes the last guy made.
We spend an entire four years, and sometimes eight, claiming "he's not my president" and blaming all of our problems on one single person that we elected.
The pattern cycles as a president's term comes to end and we're forced to make a decision on someone new.
We fear the future and the unknown. Fear brings out the worst in us and when we look back, after we make it through the times we feared, we realize there was nothing to fear after all.
Until Trump has the power to do something terrible and actually does it, I will not fear him or belittle him. He will run through this cycle, as all presidents have. However, as this cycle has now been brought to your attention, you have the choice to be afraid or to embrace the future.
