When you give a girl a sister, you get a best friend for life. A soulmate, a confidant, a ride or die, other half. You don't know what you would do without them or what life would be without them. The endless laughs and inside jokes made with each other. Staying up late having heart-to-hearts. The unbreakable bond. Unfortunately I never got to experience any of this.
I always would classify myself physically as being an only child. Simply based on the fact that I was raised an only child. But the truth is that I have an older sister. She's just in a little paradise above called heaven. Since I was born I have had my own special guardian angel that just so happens to be my sissy. I know for a fact she is and always will look after me.
Of course I didn't grow up alone. I have a cousin who is very close in age to me (born two weeks after me to be exact) and she was and is the closest thing I have to being my sister. And to you, I want to thank you. We fought like sisters, we loved like sisters, we bond like sisters. But the truth is no one can ever take the place as my sister. I have a few very close friends that I would consider my sisters again I thank you all. But the truth is they can't in a million years take my sister's place. Even though I never met my sister, we are still sisters. We share the same blood, we probably would have been twins.I won't go into much detail of her sickness as I don't have all of the exact details. I just know she had a brain tumor and passed away when she was just 17 months old. Born in 1993, Alyssa had such a great life ahead of her with a great family bringing her up. I always wonder what life would be like if the doctors had successfully saved her life. Would she be here with me today? Would I even be living where I am living right now? How different would life be if she was down here with us in this great big world? I ask these questions to myself every single day. I would love to have that someone in my life that is so special and can teach me right from wrong. The do's and dont's. A footstep to follow behind.
I think of how close we would have been, what you would have been able to teach me, if you would have let me borrow your clothes, give me advice with friend or boy drama. I wish we could have been each other's maid of honors, I wish we could have been to each other's graduations, I wish our kids would have been able to grow up together. I wish I could get a brother-in-law after passing the ones that thought they were good enough for you and vise versa. Or maybe we wouldn't have been close at all. I would never know, all I have are pictures and an imagination of you and what could have been. For those of you that have a sister, please love her forever. Argue less. Love more. Because some forget just how lucky they are to have a sister in their life. I wish I still had mine.
Alyssa, watch over mommy, daddy, all of our family and I down here on Earth. Say hi to Guelo and Guela, Rosa, Tia Patti and all of our loved ones in heaven for me. I can't wait to finally meet you when it's my time. I love you so much.
