Give Me Some Good News

It's easy to get down these days especially when the news focuses on crime and politics. I'm personally tired of getting depressed after watching the news or perusing the internet, so here's some good things that have happened in our world recently!

A not particularly unheard of story comes to us from South Florida this week. The Butts' were enjoying a simple afternoon with their grandchildren outdoors when their two pit bulls started to bark uncontrollably. The kids were sent indoors, and Mr. and Mrs. Butt quickly realized the dogs were trying to protect the small children from a venomous snake. Before they could get the dogs away, both were bitten. Luckily, the vet was able to save both dogs, and a local charity covered the outrageous vet bills for the family. Mrs. Butt says that now, more than ever, the dogs are a crucial part of the family.

Carl Warner had been slowly saving up to take his crush, Abby Deutsch, on a date when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He immediately felt obligated to put his feelings aside and enlist to protect his nation. Over sixty years went by without any form of contact between Abby and Carl before the reconnected by phone in the last decade. On August 17th, Carl and Abby were reunited by a magical kiss after 76 years of separation. Both Deutsch and Warner are in their nineties and feel contentment with whatever happens from here on out now that the two have met again.

Cami is a young girl with Autism who just happens to love one particular shirt. This target produced shirt was discontinued in 2014-2015, but Cami's family had been able to find larger sizes on eBay as she grew. However, in 2016, the family was unable to find another shirt in the same design; this made Cami heartbroken, so her mom took to Facebook begging her friends to send her anywhere she might be able to purchase the shirt from. This post quickly went viral; Cami will always be able to wear her favorite shirt. Not only did the family receive 157 shirts from strangers all across the globe, Target heard about Cami's shirt and promised to start producing the shirt again and in larger sizes, so that Cami will always have it.

Matthew Goodman is the definition of a hero. The 35 year old ex-Royal Marine served in the Iraq War and received honorable war medals which are now up for sale. Why? Well, the reason might surprise you. Goodman heard about a little girl with a very rare form of cancer, and immediately decided to sell his medals so that he could help fund her treatments. Matthew said that, as a dad, he hopes that someone would do that for his children if it were ever needed.

I hope this proved to you that hope isn't lost. In fact, most news sources actually have sections on good news; they just keep them tucked away. Although it doesn't always seem like it, people really can be good.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
