More often than not, when I tell someone I meet that I went to an all girls school for six years of my life, their jaws drop to the floor. This reaction is always attributed to the fact that I don't fit the stereotypes that are expected of a single sex private school in suburban Massachusetts. If you can't see picture why just yet, here are a few of the stereotypes that I failed to meet.
1. Preppy style
When most people think private school, they think Lily Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines. Unfortunately, my closet was almost entirely made up of Urban Outfitters and Spencer's Gifts (kidding... mostly). How's that for a typical wardrobe?
2. Bubbly personality
The majority of girls I went to school with were fun, energetic, and optimistic almost 24/7. Then there was me, the sarcastic asshole, always ready to crack a witty and profound joke in the back of the classroom.
3. Questionable sexuality
This one is a pretty taboo topic for students who attend/attended a single-sex high school or college. Unfortunately, going to a school such as this doesn't automatically warrant a swing in any sexual preference direction, so try not to assume so.
4. Expensive cars (and other accessories)
I have to admit, most the girls with whom I attended school drove around gaudy, expensive cars like Lexuses, BMWs, and Escalades. However, I drove around in a red, clunky, beaten-up suburban who went by the name of Clifford.
And the list goes on. As you can see, there are many different stereotypes that embody the vision of what a typical prep-school girl should look and act like. Just because I didn't fit them doesn't mean I didn't have a once in a lifetime opportunity that I wouldn't have traded for the world.
