There are tons of reasons why being a girl is hard but you probably haven't thought of this one...
A while ago I was scrolling through Instagram and I found a Tik Tok video that had been reposted. Basically, the concept was that girls get shamed and taunted for anything they do, at the time I didn't think this through completely and just kept scrolling. Oddly enough, yesterday I started to realize that this may be true in a lot of cases.
Some of my guy friends and I were playing a game online. I don't always fill up my time with gaming, but usually, it is how I decompress. Since I don't play often I am not the best at the game, and by now they should know this. Anytime I do something bad at the game they make fun of me, not that I care, but whenever I do good they beat me up for it. Maybe my friends are just toxic but this didn't just happen in the realm of the internet. I have noticed that when we do things in person or even in a school class they ridicule and taunt me and the other girls. It didn't matter whether we did good or bad at something, they continued and continue to tease us.
It frustrates me that this happens, and even more so that this happens to others.
Why do people have to comment on anything we do or don't do? Before I had gotten my driver's permit, people, mainly friends and family, got on my back about getting it and telling me I was lazy. Or even when I would do a presentation for a class my male peers would say I did either a terrible or just okay job. Some girls have been like this to me, but nowhere near to how many men have been this way.
Why does anything I do, whether it's good or bad matter to everyone around me? People, I find can be intrusive and extremely opinionated on other's lives. Whether we are smart, into sports, wear makeup, play video games, we are always told to do something else because we shouldn't be doing the thing that we are doing. I believe we should be able to do anything we want without people telling us that we are wrong. But unfortunately, this may never change, which is why we have to disregard other's judgments. Maybe someday we will be able to change this if we all work together, but until that happens let's break the constant of putting people down.
