It is crazy, isn't it? Just a few months ago, all you thought about was high school.. Prom, Graduation, Senior Week. Now, your whole mind set has changed. Instead of thinking about AP classes and final exams for high school, you are most likely thinking about what to take to college, move in day, and what to expect during your freshman year. Trust me, I know, it can all be very overwhelming. But when it comes to school, your dorm room is about to become your new home for the next 9 months.. 9 months that will become the best time of your life.
Yes, everything you have heard about your dorm room is true. It is literally an 11x15 foot concrete walled room with nothing but a bed, wardrobe closet and desk when entering move in day. What I suggest is decorations, decorations, and more decorations! My roommate and I always hung up not only personal decorations but little things to decorate for seasons and holidays. We had a blast decorating for Christmas even though she hated decorating for that holiday! Pictures were always good to have too! My whole wall behind my bed was covered with a collage of pictures all year from family and high school times. It always was comforting to always be reminded of such great memories especially during times I missed home. Too, a rug is a great idea! I couldn't believe how much time my friends and I spent time hanging out on the floor. It would've sucked to have had to of sit on the concrete floor all year.
To the girl that will be sleeping right across the room from you, she will more than likely become such an incredible friend of yours! It doesn't matter if you have known her for years or met through a roommate match, she will become your first best friend at school. I met my roommate through a FaceBook group. Even though we had different qualities from each other, we had the best of time living with each other all through freshman year. We may not have done EVERYTHING together, but we knew we could count on each other for anything during anytime of the day. Weather is was needing someone to cry to or in need of someone to proof read a paper, my roommate was someone I could constantly count on no matter what.
Beside your roommate, you will most likely too find someone either on your floor or on another floor of your building that will become a great friend of yours too. I met two guys the first week of school that became 2 of the best friends I made during my freshman year. They literally could be with you in less than 7 seconds if ever needed. And since at Temple you needed to swipe in using a guest pass, having someone in your building at all times was always nice. It prevented the hassle of worrying about guest policies (which are a pain!!)
Looking back at the past year, especially times spent in my dorm room, you will without a doubt have both good and bad memories in your room. Many laughs were shared when scaring my roommate when she would come back from showering and when I had soda explode in our freezer early in the morning. Tears were shed in my bed when I missed home and friends as well as when I was contemplating my major. Monday nights were always filled with 6 girls and pizza for Bachelor and Bachelorette Nights and Friday and Saturday’s were filled with times of movie nights with my roommate and coming home from awesome nights spent out in the city. Your dorm room will hold much more than your belongings from the months of August through May, it will hold a lifetime of unforgettable memories.
