We've all scrolled through our social media feeds and seen one perfect post after another. It seems as if everyone we know is celebrating a new promotion at work, an engagement, an incredible vacation and so forth. With digital media constantly shoving photoshopped lives down our throats, it's not hard to feel discouraged or lost. I'm 20 years old and see some of my friends doing awesome internships, traveling the world, and even getting married. And even though I go to school in NYC and I'm constantly busy being a full-time student, working at juice shop, volunteering, and being involved in numerous school clubs, I still feel an intense pressure to be doing more. It can be overwhelming when you are putting in long days and nights without seeing the results you want. However, no matter how loud the voice in your head is, telling you that you're not getting anywhere, turn it off.
Life seldom is greener on the other side, but it's a whole lot better when you stop comparing yourself to others. If we believe that everybody has their own path in life, then why should we compare our path to those of friends and family? The only thing that truly matters is that you are working toward a goal. So what if I work at a local juice shop right now? I am still making money, and establishing a hard work ethic that is going to help me with a more demanding job. Everybody has to start somewhere. No one wakes up to a successful career, a hot husband, and a Pottery Barn mansion. The majority of us have to work hard for a long time before acquiring such achievements. So rationalize your current situation and breathe. Wherever you are right now, realize it is only a small part of a big journey.
My yoga instructor started off class with some inspiring words last week stating, "If you are strong enough to hold these poses, you are strong enough to overcome any obstacle." No statement has resonated with me more than that one in a long time. She went on to explain that when she was told those same exact words 20 years ago, she was able to quit smoking. Whether you practice yoga or not, the message is still effective. If you can make the effort to turn in an assignment, show up to a class or shift at work, then you are strong enough to achieve your goals in life.
So I encourage you to stop comparing your life to others and appreciate that your life if your own unique path. No one will ever be able to live your life so make it special and true to yourself. When I realize how far I have come so far, I know I am capable of achieving so much more. Don't feel overwhelmed when learning about opportunities in others lives, be happy and know that you are on your way too.
