‘Girl Meets World’, the spin-off of the popular nineties sitcom ‘Boy Meets World’, was canceled by Disney Channel after only three seasons. Once news broke after many uncertainties of whether or not the show would continue on to a fourth season, the show’s stars and its loyal fans were heartbroken. In no time a social media platform had started asking for other networks to save the show, even possibly making the show more like the original and delving into deeper issues. As of late that social media platform has shifted from fans asking networks to pick up the show to fans asking, or demanding in some cases, streaming services to pick up ‘Girl Meets World’. Netflix has been the most buzzed about service to potentially pick up the series, however, Hulu has also been talked about. Fan pages on social media have urged the devoted fans to go to the Netflix website where you can suggest a show and ask they pick up ‘Girl Meets World’. As a person who loved the original ‘Boy Meets World’ and was super excited when Disney originally announced ‘Girl Meets World’, I believe that one of these streaming services should definitely pick up the show. The series already has a loyal fanbase and if it moves to a streaming service there is more chance to make the show more like the original as writers will no longer be constrained to limitations set by Disney. These potential changes, and the ability to stream whenever you want instead of having to watch at a certain time on a certain day, will also likely attract more viewers who loved ‘Boy Meets World’.
It would make sense especially for Netflix to save the series with the service’s current trends. Having Netflix Originals that are continuations or remakes of past popular network series, like ‘Fuller House’, ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’, and ‘One Day at a Time’, makes ‘Girl Meets World’ the perfect fit. These many rejuvenation projects that Netflix has taken have all been major successes for the streaming service and given the passion that ‘Girl Meets World’ fans have shown on social media in trying to save the show, this could be a source of Netflix’s next big success.
‘Girl Meets World’ is important to their generation of fans just as ‘Boy Meets World’ was important to my generation. Both shows explore growing up and tackling the world as it is, and the many lessons you learn along the way. Having watched a few episodes myself, I can definitely see the similarities between the original series and its remake. And I definitely get all sentimental when I see those characters I loved returning in ‘Girl Meets World’ as older versions of themselves. I would love to see ‘Girl Meets World’ be saved and continue to the length of its predecessor because in the original we were able to see both the characters and actors themselves grow, mature and learn in time with the viewers of the series. With the group in ‘Girl Meets World’, I know we would see a similar astonishing development in characters, actors and viewers.
Without a doubt whatever service or network should decide to save ‘Girl Meets World’ would be a hero to those dedicated fans, and to whatever new fans the series would gain from the new platform. The messages of the show, and how they have in three short seasons developed such loyal fans who are willing to demand that this show be saved make it worth saving. Letting this group of creators impact a generation as my generation was impacted by the shows predecessor is a must. I admire these fans who are so passionately fighting for something that they believe in and hope that they will find a favorable answer soon.
