Two shows from the early to mid-2000s made a resurgence my junior year and senior year of high school. One of these shows wasGilmore Girls, a seven-season story arc about the life of a coffee-obsessed mother-daughter duo (Lorelai and Rory Gilmore) living in the fictional, tight-knit community of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. At the start of the show, Lorelai works at the Independence Inn with her best friend/master chef Sookie. Rory begins attending Chilton, a prestigious college prep school, while her best friend Lane is trying to survive life with her own strict, traditional, Korean mother. The show is famous for its quick, witty dialogue (which actually caused almost each of the scripts to be about 20 pages longer than other 40-minute episodes), and Lorelai and Rory's movie nights and feasts of pizza, donuts, and Chinese food. It's been nine years since the series finale and Rory's college graduation and everyone has been anticipating the sequel that Netflix is releasing on Nov. 25, 2016. You may have heard about it. On October 5, Gilmore Girls stars and fans alike celebrated the show's sixteenth birthday, and coffee shops around the nation redecorated for the day, hanging signs, stocking up on signature coffee sleeves, and serving free coffee to become Luke's Diner (aka everyone's favorite coffee shop).
You still have about forty days to watch all 153 episodes if you're willing to take on the challenge. But whether you're a returning Gilmore Girl or you're a newcomer to Taylor's crazy town traditions, the Netflix sequel is going to bring back some wonderful things we may have forgotten about -- all of which happen to be well explained by the residents of Stars Hollow themselves. After the months and months of waiting, when it is finally November 25, my living room will be equipped with blankets, pillows, Thanksgiving leftovers, and popcorn. Because who are we kidding? I'm definitely going to be watching it more than once.
There are so many questions I have about the characters. What are Lane and Zack's kids like? What is going to happen with the characters following the passing of Edward Herrmann (who plays Lorelai's father Richard)? How much tension still exists between Luke and Christopher? Most importantly, which guy will Rory choose?! I have been slightly obsessing over that last one for a while, and although everyone loves their pick of the three boys for a different reason, Jess will forever be my favorite.
And frankly, can we just think for a minute how much we missed Kirk? I'll bet you didn't even realize it. You're welcome. (And yes, that was, in fact, a hot dog joke.)
Once you start watching, you'll learn how crazy Stars Hollow is, and how jealous you are of the people who get to live there. There is so much more to the town and its residents than what meets the eye. A year in Stars Hollow is full of 24-hour dance marathons, town meetings, and the themed events surrounding knitting, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and every holiday under the sun. You will experience all of Paris' rants, Michel's sass, graduations and first days, Friday night dinners, and weddings, and you will come to realize how much you love Stars Hollow. Each time you hear the theme song, you'll truly feel like you've come home.
I can't wait to come home to a new story one last time, and I know, as a Gilmore, that after you've watched the first episode and been sucked in, there's only one explanation:
