Getting Through The Holidays

When it comes to the holidays, I think we can all agree that we're counting down the days until we can go home and leave school in the dust for a brief week or so. We look forward to sitting on our couches with Netflix and our cats, eating holiday treats like there's no tomorrow, and sleeping a disgusting amount of hours every day. However, once we get home, things usually tend to go differently. About three days into your break, you wake up and realize the holiday parties and family shindigs are about to begin, and you still have three finals projects to start and complete, and your aunt still wants you to babysit on the only night you have freedom to drink with your friends. Let the festivities begin.

You wake up and remember that family get-together you have tonight.

This can't be. I specifically penciled "Netflix and chill" into my planner.

So you suck it up and make yourself look presentable enough to visit your family and eat all their food.

You arrive at the family party, and your parents begin talking about you across the room to family members you haven't seen in years.

Like, I can hear you guys talking about me. Rude.

The food is finally on the table. Heck yeah.

Never. Stop. Eating.

You finally get to sit at the grown-up table this year.

Screw the kids table. You can't sit with us.

Grandma sober:

Grandma drunk:

Get it, grandma.

And the first family photo of the night happens...

You really thought you were going to be able to get out of it this year.

You couldn't hide from your great aunt Carol, and the judgements come out.

The judgements literally never stop.

And then every human who brought a significant other begins to judge too.

I'm not sure what you people want from me.

The night is finally over.

It was fun, guys.

At the end of the day, between all the good, bad, and strange, you remember why you look forward to going on break each year. Even though you might go a little insane, most of all, you were happy. There's nothing like a family holiday get-together, all strangeness and shenanigans aside.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
