The holidays are supposed to be a time when people relax and spend time with their family. However, the holidays have also become a time when certain people seem to get offended very easily. You could walk up to a person and say "Merry Christmas" to them and they might end up getting offended because they are Jewish. We live in a society where being politically correct trumps everything, but we also live in a society where you can say "Happy Holidays" to someone who is Christian and they get offended because you did not say "Merry Christmas."
Do you remember the red cup debate? Two weeks ago Starbucks came out with their seasonal red cup to scores of controversy. This year, instead of having snowflakes, snowmen, and Santa on the cup, Starbucks went with a minimalist red cup. This offended a lot of people because, according to them, the move was trying to "remove Christmas" from the season by removing all of the seasonal imagery. People protested by making their baristas write "Merry Christmas" on their cups to try and bring that spirit. Social media blew up with people arguing over whether the design was offensive or if the design was even relevant. Why is it that a paper coffee cup is the reason that someone's holiday is ruined? If people really want to get mad, then they should get mad about the price of the coffee in that cup.
A similar thing happened on Saturday when Reese's released their new Christmas tree shaped candy. The problem was that the candy did not look like a tree at all and people felt that the Christmas spirit was being taken away. Again, people took to social media to voice their concerns over the new candy design. My question is: how is a piece of chocolate going to ruin a holiday? It's not like the candy is going to tell little Jimmy the secret behind Santa Claus.
In today's society there are some people who sometimes get offended over little things. It could be that you didn't put up your holiday decorations up at the right time, that you wished someone to enjoy the wrong holiday, or that did not specify a holiday for someone to enjoy. The holidays should really be a time where you enjoy time off from school and being with family. People should not let a coffee cup or a piece of chocolate ruin their holiday--you should leave that to Grandma's awkward questions over Christmas dinner.
