There are very few things in the world as wonderful as puppy kisses. Next in line would be feeling puppy breath on your face or a tiny puppy heartbeat on your chest while they cuddle you.

Let's face it, we've all been there. You walk into PetSmart to get food for your goldfish and lo and behold: it's adoption day. A bunch of crates are in the middle of the store filled with every size, shape, and color pup imaginable. So you do what everyone else in that position does, you cave. You adopt a puppy and call your parents afterward to tell them (better to ask forgiveness than permission, right?).

The start of this story is great. I have always been a big proponent of "adopt don't shop." But I'm here to talk to you about what happens after you bring that doggo home.

1. Having a dog is a financial commitment.

I know way too many college kids who adopt dogs just to take them to the shelter or the pound (or worse, just let them outside) because they can't afford food, vet bills, the constant tearing up toys, etc. You have to make sure you have the money and you're willing to spend it on your furry friend.

2. Having a dog is a time commitment.

You can't just leave your dog in its crate all day while you're at class, or studying, or partying it up with your friends. You can't leave it in the backyard all day if there are inclement weather conditions. You have to give the pupper lots of love, spend time playing with it, and make sure it gets to use the bathroom often enough.

3. Having a dog tests your patience.

I know we all silently judge people who call their dogs their "children," but it's honestly an accurate comparison. Dogs get into things they shouldn't, have accidents inside, and tear stuff up. You have to make sure you have the patience to train them and help them gain proper puppy manners.

Now that we have some of the not so fun puppy stuff out of the way, let me tell you why you should get a doggo in college:

1. You will gain one of the most loyal best friends ever.

My dog, Shiner, would do absolutely anything for me. He is the most loyal and caring creature I have ever met. I can't explain the bond we have but I think everyone should experience it in their lifetime

2. There is nothing better than coming home to a dog.

I can leave my apartment for five minutes but when I come back Shiner acts like I've been gone for years. I love coming home to a tail wagging like crazy, puppy paws dancing around, and lots of wet kisses. If I've had a bad day, I promise, it instantly just got a million times better.

3. Your dog will be with you through thick and thin.

Your dog is going to be with you through everything. Graduating college, moving into your first "grown-up" place, getting your first big adult job, getting engaged, getting married, and even having your first child. Your dog will be there to celebrate every milestone with you. Not only that, they will also be there to comfort you during any and every hardship you face.

I can tell you right now the benefits of adopting a furry friend in college far outweigh the cons. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and it will be yours too. I can't wait to experience life after college with my "child."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
