Getting To Work

The importance of having a job in our generation

Finding a job isn't easy. Especially as a college student who can't commit to long work schedules or more than a few months. Unfortunately, most college lifestyles don't lend well to not having a source of income. For awhile it seems to be okay and your bank account isn't dwindling too bad- but eventually it hits that a job needs to happen.

Summer is the prime time to find a job or two to work at while you are home. You have full days to handle a full-time job, and you can make decent money as well. However, telling your potential employer that you will only be available for three months sometimes makes a bad first impression. If you are lucky enough to find a job that allows you to only work for the summers — it's best you take it.

Personally, I hate conventional jobs. I have too much anxiety to work in a food place or a high-paced, stressful environment. I thrive in odd jobs or places where I will be left alone to work. For the past year I have worked for my father and done my fair share of babysitting and dog sitting. I am able to manage my money fairly well so this has worked for me. This year, I'm stepping it up and taking on a full-time nannying job for three kids.

I'm trying to leap into the adult world pretty much head first and I'm terrified. I don't want to wake up early and work all day, but it's the job. I have bills to pay, tuition and sorority dues. I am lucky that my parents help me with most of my larger financial responsibilities, but I would like to provide for myself one day.

Whether it be a nannying job or an office job, it is imperative for our generation to have a source of income. Everything costs money these days and we shouldn't always rely on our parents. The cost of college is rising every year as is the price of everything else. Even Disney World increased their prices this year. This inflation isn't going to get better any time soon either, so having a job is important.

Having a job doesn't have to be all bad though! When you finally nail down that above minimum wage job — celebrate! Buy yourself some shoes, take your family to dinner, "treat yo self!" However, don't forget to put some in the bank for those sorority dues and gas for your car. Having a steady income can have many benefits. Sure, working is difficult, but you'll be proud of yourself for sticking with it and making good money.

The more you work, the more money you can stick in your bank account, and then the more money you have to do fun things. If you are working a difficult shift, encourage yourself to stick with it and you can reap the rewards later.

Getting a job is hard in today's day and age, but ultimately worth it. What are you waiting for? Go out! Get one!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
