It's All About Me!

A little Q+A to get to know me!

It's All About Me!
Melody Hinkle

If you had to explain yourself to someone new in 20 words or less, what would you say?

Simple gal; believes in deep friendships, loud music and great hair.

Why did you start writing for Odyssey?

I was offered the opportunity by a former high school classmate, and loved the idea of freedom to express myself on any topic I deem fit. Also I watch too much Hulu so this at least is productive for my brain cells.

It’s one thing to sign up for an opportunity like this, but it’s another thing to stay committed and give it your all. What has kept you writing for the team?

The comments and shares are a great confidence booster of course, but even without all that it feels good to put my thoughts onto paper (or the computer screen at least). My Odyssey life has been focused on my mission trip to Haiti but I'm excited to finish that up and show everyone what else I have to say!

What would you tell someone who is interested in writing for Odyssey? Any words of wisdom you have? Any warnings?

Do it! But be sure to meet the deadlines and have at least an hour a week you can spare. Find inspiration in everyday of your life. USE A THESAURUS. It helps you sound smart.. or um "astute". Don't be afraid to contact your fellow teammates, leader, or chief editor. That is why they're there. Know the difference between your and you're.

What’s your favorite article that you’ve had published?

Like I mentioned earlier, I've only written about Haiti so far. The whole series has been a blast to publish! I have been brainstorming some exciting topic ideas for future articles so keep an eye out!

Would you ever let someone in your life design a tattoo for you, and would you get the tattoo done without knowing what it was? If so, who and why? If not, why?

Uh, duh! I love tattoos! I know my mom would choose something totally sentimental. Or maybe I'd get one of my ten year old twin brothers' to come up with a kick ass design that'll probably have to do with superheroes.

Which TV show or movie cast do you wish you could be a part of?

Full House. That show is the bomb! Love having a big family and a hot uncle.

If you could live in any time period, when would you choose? Why?

The Victorian Era because of their over the top outfits and caked on makeup. Also, they used a white powder for their face that symbolizes their wealth status and I'm naturally pretty pasty so I think I'd do well.

Which fashion trend of the past or present makes you cringe the most? Which one do you wish stayed around or became more popular?

Candy necklaces. They don't look OR taste good. Double whammy! I'm a big fan of having pockets in my pants clothing. But the world is filled with leggings and fake jean pockets. HERE'S TO POCKETS!

Would your five year old self be happy with your current career choice? Or did you have a different idea of what you wanted to do when you were younger?

My five year old self was obsessed with cutting the hair off my Barbies and makeup. What do ya know, I'm actually a hairdresser now! You could say I'm living out my childhood dream.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year?

Returning to school this fall and my trip to Haiti next year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
