In the weeks before arriving at campus, new students tend to stress about their future dorm rooms. Gathering supplies and planning decorations, your dorm room set-up is one safe space you can personalize to create your home on the Hilltop.
Here's what to honestly expect from your future home coupled with its personality a la Harry Potter.
1. New South: Gryffindor
Zoo South, like Gryffindor, gets more attention than other dorms, if only for its sheer quantity of freshmen.
"New South is a very social dorm," according to tour guides. It's true. You'll always find an event happening or a friend to hang out with in New South. With 100 people on each floor, you're almost guaranteed to form a few solid friend groups of people living right down the hall. You'll also probably find a hall mate in your major and others in most of your core classes. Even better, you'll meet random people with absolutely no common interest who end up becoming some of your best friends. It's definitely possible to become acquainted with everyone living on your floor. However, that will take serious effort on your part, and there will always be a few stragglers who you rarely see around. With a central location, any place on campus is only a 10-minute walk away. The HFSC, perfect for group studying or a Hilltoss dinner, is right on the bottom floor. Also, Leo's is literally across the street; I'll let you decide for yourself if that's a pro or con. Laundry rooms are on each floor.
2. Darnall: Slytherin
Residents of Darnall become accustomed to using whatever means possible simply to survive "The Dirty D."
Everyone loves to hate on Darnall, but the physical isolation brings all the residents together. It's not even that isolated; the other three freshmen dorms just happen to be together in the middle of campus. Bonus points if you're in the NHS because St. Mary's is 10 feet away from your bedroom. If you get hurt, the hospital is just a short walk across the street. Also Epi, open 24-hours with the best quality food on campus, is right downstairs. Leo's is far away, but you're not really missing out on much. There is one giant laundry room in the basement.
Kristen Krumenacker raves about Darnall: "It really is such a community, and I honestly think I never would have been able to become so close to the other people on my floor if I lived anywhere else. Granted, there are aspects of Darnall that are simply annoying, but even those things were bonding experiences. I got to live with amazing people whom I probably wouldn't have become friends with otherwise. I honestly wouldn't change my freshmen dorm assignment for the world."
3. Harbin: Ravenclaw
Because you have to be smart to navigate through Harbin.
Harbin's nine floors are each divided into three clusters with eight rooms in each cluster. (See, math already.) Students living in Harbin tend to develop much closer friendships within their own cluster than with the other students on their floor. To outsiders, the clusters can seem like an elaborate maze. Also, the elevators are often slow, so I'd recommend using the stairs when possible. The laundry room is on the ground floor. People generally speak well about Harbin, and it's located closest to one of the main classroom buildings. Harbin has also been the home of Bill Clinton and a meth lab (no relation).
4. Village C: Hufflepuff
Village C is likable in its own right, just small and often overlooked.
Lucky Village C residents have their own bathrooms in each room. Make sure you actually remember to clean it and never run out of toilet paper. There are relatively very few people living on each floor, so floormates develop very close friendships. Right between New South and Harbin, Village C also has a very central location on campus. Village C West (VCW) houses freshmen and Living Learning Communities (LLC). Further divided into the X and Y wing, VCW has 16 floors total. VCE has a freshmen floor or two but also houses transfer students and other upperclassmen. The Village C Laundry room is on VCE 3, so if you're in VCW, be prepared to drag your laundry across the courtyard.
Leah Reinhard says, "My floor was really close, I met my best friends there. The rooms are not very big, which is typical for freshmen, but it wasn't uncomfortable... The bathroom is a big plus."
In summary, even though there's no contest and everyone loves the dorm they end up with, New South wins. #NS4ever.
**Special thanks to Kristen, Leah, and other friends who got into a heated debate over their role as proxy sorting hat.
