There are about 800,000 million users on TikTok and over 60% of the users are Gen-Z (according to Oberlo and Forbes). Young TikTok users have made big impacts on issues that they really care about. Memes from TikTok have also made big impacts by introducing viral videos or even making it on the news. Also, users have led many creators to fame by following creators and helping them gain millions of followers in just weeks.
The Music Industry
Many viral songs on TikTok have made their way unto to the Billboard charts. For example, Lil Nas X's song "Old Town Road" became viral from TikTok and now holds the record for the longest-running song at the number one spot on the Billboard Records. Other artists such as Blanco Brown, Regard, Sueco The Child, and more have gotten more clout due to their songs being used in millions of videos on TikTok.
Giving Opportunities to Young Creators
16-year-old Charli D'Amelio began TikTok in June 2019 and already has 80.7 million followers (as of August 19, 2020). She currently holds the record for the most followers on TikTok. Personally, I follow her on TikTok and it feels like she gets a million new followers every week. Since the beginning of her TikTok career, she has now performed for Bebe Rhexa, partnered with the makeup brand Morphe to create a makeup line with her sister Dixie D'Amelio, she has partnered with Aerie, and more. Other popular creators such as Hype House members or Sway House members have gotten sponsorships through their TikTok fame.
Trump's Rally
On June 19, 2020, President Trump held a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Teenagers on TikTok thought that it would be funny to reserve seats at the rally and not show up in order to embarrass Trump and get fewer people to be at his first rally. There were many viral videos of teens dancing to the Macarena while explaining that they bought tickets to Trump's rally, but had no intentions of going. Many people even used fake names and/or old emails when signing up for tickets. "Brad Parscale [claimed] 800,000 people registered for tickets despite the venue seating just over 19,000" (according to Forbes).
The Manny Flag
On June 25, 2020, popular TikTok creator, Wahony, posted a viral video explaining his idea to play a prank on Fox News by convincing them that Gen-Z wanted to change the American flag. Gen-Z wanted to play a prank changing the American Flag to the Manny flag. Manny is one of the main characters in the popular book series "Diary of A Wimpy Kid." "In just three days, the Manny petition got over three million signatures, was trending on Twitter, and made its way around the internet" (Wahony). Even though the whole plan was a prank that Gen-Z followed, the Manny Flag has an official website with actual petitions addressing real issues.
