Looking around the campus and seeing so many happy couples kissing before class and holding hands brings warmth to the heart. However, how many of these men truly act like gentlemen behind closed doors?
From a very young age, I was taught all of the basics of good manners and how to treat a woman. It all started with the first lesson of holding doors. Now, how many of you guys out there hold the door for your girl on a regular basis? I am not talking about just every now and again at dinner but all of the time? Something like that does not go out of fashion and it truly shows the other person how special they are.
I am also not referring to just holding doors at restaurants or at movies, but also holding the car door open for them too. Many may find this idea silly or outdated but does being a gentleman truly go out of style?
Another very important part of being a gentleman, a point that I am shocked to need to write about because it should be common knowledge: never take advantage of your girlfriend. Should she have too much to drink at a party or at your house, help her into bed, tuck her in with a blanket and a pillow and that is all.
There are too many stories on the news and Facebook of men taking advantage of women they're dating. A man who does that cannot really call himself a man, let alone a gentleman if he has the nerve to take advantage of any woman.
This leads me to another point, a good boyfriend and gentleman needs to do what his girlfriend is interested in as well. I have heard so many boyfriends talk about playing video games, not to say that a lot of girls do not play them, and doing so many other things that are strictly their idea. Not taking to heart the interests of their girlfriends.
Scrolling through Facebook, you can see the memes about "Netflix and chill" which are really based off of true happenings.
Guys, it is time to get out into the world and adventure. Start planning actual dates with your girlfriend.
If you have ever been on Pinterest start there. For those that have not, it is time to start. You can see so many great date ideas, for example: I found a great idea on Pinterest to make an adventure jar with date ideas and randomly pick from them each time we hangout. That is what being a gentleman is about.
It is about taking the time to do little things for your girlfriend that make her smile and leave great memories for both of you, not about "Netflix and chill".
It is not wrong to have a simple movie night but make it a fun adventure. Make her smile and laugh, hold the car door open for her when you go out on your next date, hold the door at the restaurant and surprise her with flowers every now and again.
Do not let gentlemen become a dying breed.
