If you’re an Illinois State student like me who tends to stare at the ground while they walk to class, you’ve probably noticed more than a few “Gary Johnson for President” chalking writings on the sidewalk, and although I don’t have much of an opinion on Gary Johnson personally, I’m here to tell you that you should definitely NOT vote for Gary Johnson this election.
Now I usually don’t like to dabble in politics because it rarely leads to anything beneficial for all parties involved, but this election I felt it necessary to say something. I don’t consider myself to be a very political person and I’m certainly not endorsing the two-party system. And while I usually support third party candidates I am here to say that this election is not the year to vote for one.
Regardless of your political views, I am writing under the assumption that you agree with me on one thing: Donald Trump is unfit to be the president of the United States of America. If you do support Trump’s candidacy, then this article is not for you.
Now regardless of the way you feel about Hillary Clinton, if you do not want Trump to become president, you must vote for her. I am personally not a fan of Hillary myself but I do believe that her position as Secretary of State and her countless other accomplishments through the years more than qualifies her for the job, regardless of her personal attitude or whatever else you base your opinion of her on.
The race between Trump and Clinton is extremely close, and if you’re like me, you have no idea how Trump was able to make it this far, and that fact that he has, and brings with him so many supporters is actually quite terrifying for the future of the country. But the fact remains: the race is close.
Any vote for another candidate, libertarian, green party, or write in, will greatly hurt Hillary’s chances more than Trump’s because Clinton’s share of the votes is always placed with the share of third-party votes with few exceptions. Gary Johnson and Jill Stein will NOT be elected as president. It will not happen. They do not have a chance of winning the popular vote, it is simply not how elections in this country work. Voting for either of them is essential a waste of your vote and a helpful push for Trump.
I know many people feel this year that there is no good choice for a president and this might be true. But this year is not the year to throw your vote away in an act of rebellion. The most important outcome of this election is that we do not allow Donald Trump to become the most powerful man on the planet and the only way to do this is to cast a vote for Hillary Clinton. Please do what is right for our country and vote for her.
